About us
Royal Greenwich is a vibrant borough, with a rich history and diverse community. We’re proud of the work we do to serve our residents. We have a vision of a happier, healthier and more connected borough. To achieve this, we’re investing heavily in our digital services. We published our first ever digital strategy in 2020 and are currently updating it to shape what we’re working on for the next four years and beyond. It’s an exciting time to join us. We're searching for people-focused digital experts to join our team. We’re focused on improving services for our residents and making our borough truly digital. There's plenty of opportunity for you to have your say and help shape our work.
The role
As part of our Product team in Digital, Operations and Access, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team working on designing new products and improving existing ones. You’ll work closely with other council teams to improve information about their services, listening to their needs and balancing them with business and technical constraints. You’ll speak up for our users, whether they are residents or staff, and use data and research to make sure our products and services meet their needs. You’ll report to our content design lead and play an active role in developing our content design community of practice.
What you’ll do
- Take a lead role in developing a content team and community at the Royal Borough of Greenwich; hiring, setting standards and role‑modeling multidisciplinary working.
- Create and iterate content for our most vulnerable residents to meet policy intent, taking content from discovery to production.
- Work with senior leaders across the council to help them understand content design and how transforming how they communicate with their customers could improve service delivery.
- Take responsibility for the career development of your line reports, arranging learning and development opportunities as needed as well as setting clear objectives, coaching, mentoring and managing performance.
- Use analytics data, user feedback and user research to identify the needs of users, map user journeys and inform content strategy.
- Review and provide direction on the work of other content designers and experts from other disciplines.
- Create content strategy with the services you pair with, helping them make their user communication clearer and more outcome‑driven, enabling the service to transform.
- Take a lead role in building a content style guide for the council which reflects cross‑government content design standards, ensuring we speak to our users in consistent and accessible ways regardless of channel or service used.
- Coach and mentor more junior members of the team.
Who we’re looking for
For this role, you’ll need to be an established content designer and have experience working on multidisciplinary agile projects. You’ll also have experience managing complex stakeholder relationships. We are looking for someone who shares our values and principles:
- naturally curious – you keep on top of your own learning and development and are up to date with the latest techniques and trends in your field.
- an advocate for user‑centered practices, embedded within agile delivery.
- able to explain complex technical concepts in plain language.
- committed to improving residents’ lives and opportunities.
- demonstrating respect and fairness.
- taking ownership.
- doing things better.
- working together across the council.
These values are incredibly important to us, as is building an environment that promotes knowledge, empathy, equality, and skill sharing.
What we offer
- 28 days’ annual leave.
- Flexible and partly remote working arrangements.
- Mental health support, including an external counselling service.
- Long service awards.
- Learning and development opportunities, including apprenticeships.
- Staff networks for mental health, LGBTQ+ support, racial equality and more.
- Vouchers for free eye tests.
- Annual season ticket loans.
- Cycle to work scheme.
- Greenwich One Card which entitles you to discounts at local businesses.
