We offer learning and development for all employees, clinical or non-clinical, and opportunities to gain orthopaedic experience before applying for National ST selection in Trauma and Orthopaedics. By the end of the year, you may independently perform hip hemiarthroplasty, DHS, gamma nail of femur, ankle fixation, external fixation of tibia, MUA of common paediatric fractures, K-wiring of wrists, and more depending on your allocation of duties. You will gain experience in a variety of elective orthopaedic procedures and become confident in outpatient management of common fractures. You will be encouraged to deliver at least 1 audit project during the 12 months and may join ongoing departmental research projects. You will work at a level equivalent to Middle Grade and be an integral part of a team working for a consultant, attending elective lists and clinics, and rosters for fracture clinics and regular trauma lists. You may travel between hospital sites to attend peripheral clinics at West Berkshire Community Hospital, Newbury, Bracknell Healthspace and/or Townlands Hospital, Henley.

Responsibilities
- Attend your consultant’s elective lists and elective clinics.
- Be rostered for fracture clinics and regular trauma lists.
- Travel between hospital sites to attend peripheral clinics as required (e.g., West Berkshire Community Hospital, Bracknell Healthspace, Townlands Hospital).
- Independently perform defined orthopaedic procedures as experience allows (e.g., hip hemiarthroplasty, DHS, gamma nail, ankle fixation, external fixation of tibia, MUA of paediatric fractures, K wiring of wrists).
- Gain experience in a variety of elective orthopaedic procedures based on allocation.
- Engage in outpatient management of common fractures.
- Deliver at least 1 audit project during the 12-month period and participate in ongoing departmental research projects.
Qualifications
- Full GMC registration with a current licence to practice.
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Expected to have gained MRCS and capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement and prioritise clinical need.
- Demonstrates appropriate technical competence and evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills and judgement; validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date.
- Desirable: attendance at relevant courses (e.g., ATLS, Basic Surgical Skills, CCrISP or equivalent); understanding of audit principles, clinical risk management, and evidence-based practice.
- Understanding of basic research principles, methodology, and ethics; ability to contribute to research.
- Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others.
- Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements (degrees, prizes, awards, publications, presentations).
- Evidence of active participation in audit and risk management or clinical/laboratory research.
- Evidence of Foundation Programme competences or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice; evidence of CT/ST1 competences in this specialty by appointment.
- At least 12 months’ experience in Surgical Specialties (not including Foundation modules) by time of appointment; ability to provide a complete employment history.
- Evidence that career progression aligns with personal circumstances and displays realistic insight into surgery and the demands of a surgical lifestyle.
- Commitment to self-directed learning, reflective practice, and ongoing professional development.
- Extracurricular activities or achievements relevant to surgery and/or surgical subspecialty (where relevant).
- Appropriate UK professional registration.
