BAM UK & Ireland are looking for a Legal Counsel to join our UK & Ireland Legal Services team.

Making Possible

Working as a member of the legal services team, you will provide responsive, pragmatic and cost-effective legal advice to optimise the management of legal risk across the business. You will support a wide range of stakeholders, contribute to complex construction projects, and manage external legal advisors where required.

Key responsibilities

  • Construction
    • Provide non-contentious/transactional support to projects across BAM UK&I’s three Segments (Infrastructure, Construction and Ireland).
    • A key and embedded member of the tendering and project teams, acting as a “critical friend”, providing commercial and pragmatic advice.
    • Advise on main contracts, subcontracts and supply chain risk, including drafting and negotiating amendments.
    • Draft and amend both bespoke and standard form contracts, including maintaining precedent documentation.
    • Review technical contract documents (e.g. specifications, procedures) to ensure legal robustness.
    • Manage claims and dispute resolution, including developing negotiation strategies and managing external counsel.
  • General Commercial
    • Draft and review commercial contracts across the business.
    • Deliver legal training and guidance on key topics.
    • Support the provision of advice on a range of business matters, through management of input from external counsel when appropriate, including:
      • Health, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability legislation.
      • Procurement and competition law.
      • Intellectual property rights.

Ability to get to one of the following offices c. 2 days per week – London, Glasgow, Farnborough, Manchester.

What do you bring to the role?

Essential

  • Qualified solicitor (c. 4–6 years PQE) or barrister with equivalent experience. PQE is a guide and we welcome applications from those with different PQE levels, where you otherwise have the required skills.
  • Proven experience in supporting non-contentious construction matters.
  • Strong ability to interpret client requirements and communicate clear, concise advice.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience within the construction department of a leading law firm and/or leading in house legal team.

Desirable

  • Experience in-house or secondment with a contractor.
  • Dispute management experience.
  • Exposure to supervising junior lawyers.
