This is an exciting and rare opportunity to join the New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) as a Donor Medicine Specialist (DMS). The role is designed for an experienced clinician seeking to further their career within a supportive, high-expertise team. Full specialty-specific training, with ongoing collegial support, will be provided.

You will join a highly regarded team that includes Transfusion Medicine Specialists, hospital-based Transfusion Nurse Specialists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists (Donor Health). The position is based in Christchurch, at one of our largest blood centres, where you will be encouraged to develop expertise in specialist areas that align with organisational objectives.

As part of the Clinical Services team, led by the Chief Medical Officer, you will deliver high-quality clinical support for donation services (including blood, plasma and tissue donation) at both national and regional levels. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leadership
  • Continuous improvement
  • Communication with a range of stakeholders
  • Regular engagement with donors about health matters
  • Escalation of clinical issues
  • Education of blood collection staff and rotating haematology registrars

Salary ranges from $142,683 to $250,560, depending on skills, registration and experience.

The NZBS Christchurch Centre provides blood and plasma processing, testing and specialist services for the South Island and is one of our largest donation centres. The centre includes an active clinical apheresis unit, stem-cell processing and a therapeutic venesection programme.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand in either a General or Vocational Scope.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills and a background in an area such as general practice, infectious diseases, public health, or epidemiology.
  • Experience in other clinical specialities is also considered.

This position is intended to be at a specialist consultant level, but candidates with appropriate experience who may not be at this level will also be considered.
