When you join the RAMM Development Trust, you help make incredible things happen. The board receives RAMM support requests. Often local funds allocated by the Trust are used as match funding to secure further income. In turn this increases the benefit to RAMM and the communities it serves. A charity’s Treasurer is always a vital part of any charity board. Sound and timely financial record keeping and reporting feeds into important decision making. Fundraising through the RAMM Development Trust enables transformative projects to happen at RAMM. Decisions to support such projects can only be made with sound financial knowledge backing the decision.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining accounting records (spreadsheet used to date)
  • Approving Gift Aid and donation income claims (Gift Aid report is produced by RAMM’s CRM and the donation income claim is drawn from RAMM’s financial management software)
  • Banking processes (online) and mandates when needed
  • Participating in the Investment Committee and monitoring performance of the RAMM Future Fund
  • Providing concise financial updates at quarterly Trustee meetings
  • Liaising with Independent Examiners for the annual accounts (prepared by external firm)
  • Maintaining the Charity Commission record and submitting the annual return

Qualifications and Experience

  • Interest in Devon’s heritage and cultural life; museums in general and RAMM in particular desirable
  • Financial experience, ideally relating to charity accounts
  • Willingness to develop relationships and secure funding from private individuals, trusts and/or companies
  • Understanding of the responsibilities involved in the governance of charities, and willingness to attend training sessions if required

Time Commitment

  • Trust board meetings are held on average four times a year
  • Additional meetings and events to brief Trustees on specific projects and museum activities
  • Trustees encouraged to attend private views, corporate receptions, and invite guests
  • Occasional meetings and calls with the RAMM Development Team
  • May be asked to attend meetings with donors and grant-makers
  • Trustees appointed for a period of four years (We suggest around 8-10 hours a month will be required, but the Treasurer is welcome to be more involved if they have the time to do so.)

The Trust operates as a registered CIO charity; it is registered with the Fundraising Regulator and operates within the Code of Fundraising Practice. As a member of the RAMM Development Trust board, you will play a vital role in supporting and sharing culture and heritage with RAMM’s audiences. Those audiences include local repeat visitors from the Southwest, tourists, and a diverse range of age groups. As the Treasurer, your role is part of a supportive board of 10 Trustees. You will also serve on the delegated Investment Committee, responsible for monitoring the RAMM Future Fund portfolio performance. You will be the key liaison between the Independent Examiners and the external accountancy firm producing the accounts, and the Treasurer will have responsibility for submitting the Annual Return via the Charity Commission and maintaining the commission record. You will work closely with RAMM’s Management and Development Teams. RAMM, like many cultural organisations, faces financial pressures. Being a Local Authority service, it must reduce reliance on public funding; increasing fundraising and commercial activity will be key. The RAMM Development Trust's role will become ever more important. RAMM will also be impacted by Local Government Reorganisation, and the Trust may help navigate future changes. Consider joining the extended family of supporters to help ensure RAMM can thrive long into the future.
