Radiographer in London

As an RAF Radiographer, you will be an important member of the diagnostic healthcare team. You will provide clinicians with diagnostic images of the body to assist in the treatment of patients.

Responsibilities

• Use a range of technical imaging equipment
• Liaise with a wide range of healthcare professionals and clinicians
• Function in a variety of departments including the Emergency Department, ITU, Operating Theatres, In Patients, Out Patients and Portable Imaging

Qualifications

• Qualified Applicants: State−registered radiographer with BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography, registered with the HCPC as a Diagnostic Radiographer.
• Unqualified Applicants: Five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or five Scottish National 5s at Grade C, including Maths/Application of Mathematics and English Language/Literature and Science plus A‑levels.
• Age 17–47 years old (must attest before 48th birthday)
• Commit to a minimum of 12 years service
• Meet the health and fitness criteria and pass a fitness test
• Meet specific nationality and residency criteria

Education Requirements

• Qualified applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography and be registered with the HCPC.
• Unqualified applicants must meet the GCSE/science and A‑level criteria listed above.

Nationality & Residency

• Must be a citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality, or have been a Commonwealth citizen since birth with ‘right to work’ immigration status.
• Residency of at least 5 years in the UK (or a minimum of 3 years) is required.
• Candidates must also be eligible for Security Check (SC) clearance.

Fitness Requirements

• Physical fitness is required to complete initial and specialist training and to perform duties effectively.
• Candidates must pass a Pre‑Joining Fitness Test (PJFT) – a 2.4 km run on a treadmill.
• Fitness levels required vary by age and gender.
• BMI and other health criteria must be within acceptable limits.

Background Checks

• Declare any previous spent and unspent convictions
• Check qualifications under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
• Achieve the minimum Security Check (SC) clearance

Disqualifying Factors

• Membership of or support for a group that stirs racial hatred or violence
• Awaiting court appearance or unspent convictions (spent convictions may also need declaration)
• Misuse of drugs, solvents or anabolic steroids
• Tattoos, brands or bead implants that are obscene, offensive, or politically extreme; facial tattoos are restricted
• Body piercings that do not close or cause permanent damage
• Undischarged bankrupt status

Training & Career Path

• Initial training: Basic Recruit Training (10 weeks) at RAF Halton covering fitness, military discipline and basic medical training.
• Phase 2: Specialist training in radiography onwards to a BSc (Hons) in Diagnostic Radiography (for those without qualifications) or further professional development for qualified candidates.
• First posting: RCDM Birmingham or RCDM Oxford in an NHS imaging department.
• Ongoing: Continuous professional development, maintenance of HCPC registration, and opportunities for promotion based on service and merit.
• Career prospects: Promotion to Corporal after 1 year (unqualified entrants) or upon posting for qualified entrants; subsequent promotion to Sergeant based on completion of service courses and merit.
