Dental Nurse

As an RAF Dental Nurse you work alongside our dentists and dental hygienists providing essential support to the practice and ensuring patients receive the highest level of treatment.

Responsibilities

• Select and prepare fillings and impression materials.
• Cast the models on which dentures or appliances are constructed.
• Select, prepare and maintain dental equipment.
• Assist with clinical procedures under the supervision of a qualified dental professional.
• Maintain a clean, safe and efficient working environment.
• Comply with all health-safety and infection control protocols.

Requirements

• GCSE at Grade C/4-5 (or equivalent), including English Language; or SCE Standard Grades Grade 2/Scottish National 5.
• Qualified Dental Nurses must hold a current General Dental Council (GDC) registration.
• Age between 17 and 47 years (must be 48 before the end of the year in which the application is submitted).
• Citizen of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, holder of dual UK/other nationality, or a Commonwealth citizen with ‘right to work’ immigration status.
• Residence in the UK for the five years immediately preceding the application (a minimum of three years may be considered).
• Unqualified dental nurses must commit to a minimum of three years’ service after the completion of Phase Two Training.
• Agree to undergo the required security clearance (Security Check – SC) and background checks.

Training & Education

• Phase 1 – Basic Recruit Training (10 weeks): Course at RAF Halton covering military fundamentals, fitness, and an introduction to the RAF life.
• Phase 2 – Specialist Training (ongoing): Depending on qualification status:
• Unqualified staff complete the National Diploma in Dental Nursing awarded by the National Exam Board for Dental Nurses, including residential training at Defence Medical Services and placement in an RAF unit.
• Qualified staff attend a 5-day familiarisation at a suitable unit prior to their first assignment.
• Additional qualifications are offered throughout the career, including oral health education, dental radiography, fluoride application, impression taking, and leadership and management modules.
• All qualified dental nurses must maintain GDC registration by completing the mandatory Continuing Dental Professional (CDP) programme.

Career Progression

After 12 years of service, you may achieve the rank of Air Specialist (Class 1) and become eligible for promotion to Corporal and beyond. Promotions are awarded by competitive selection and can lead to roles such as Deputy Practice Manager, Practice Manager, Regional Equipment Manager, or Dental Nurse Instructor. Senior appointments may involve governance, assurance, or policy work at Regional Headquarters or Defence Primary Healthcare Headquarters. Skills and experience gained are highly transferable to civilian dental practice and leadership roles.
