Overview

Job title: Maintenance Technician – Multi skilled – Fabric. Working as part of the University Maintenance Team to ensure the upkeep, repairs and general maintenance of the University\’s buildings fabric, with particular emphasis on the electrical or mechanical services and equipment, is carried out safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out general maintenance and repair work as part of the maintenance team, with specific responsibility for the building fabric.
  • Carry out other maintenance tasks that could include working on older and heritage buildings, plumbing, boiler repairs, air handling plant, carpentry, painting & decorating & general building maintenance both inside and out, at University properties.
  • Carry out new installation works as required in a variety of commercial and domestic environments.
  • Carry out regular, routine maintenance and safety checks on University systems and equipment including the fire alarm, fire doors, emergency lights, intruder alarms, CCTV.
  • Carry out testing procedures on fixed installations through to portable appliance testing.
  • Record electronically all safety checks and maintenance work carried out, reporting time and materials used and identify any additional defects.
  • Be part of 24-hour call-out cover on a rota basis (3 weeks). Occasional attendance may include unsocial hours for larger functions or student events.
  • Monitor and maintain stocks of materials, equipment and heating fuel to ensure sufficient levels to carry out all work and maintain heating and hot water services.
  • Monitor and test heating systems/controls to ensure optimal energy consumption and minimum greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Observe safe and environmentally considerate working practices at all times, complying with health, safety and other applicable regulations, and stay up to date with new regulations.
  • Assist other departments on occasion, especially during busy conference periods.
  • Perform such other tasks as may be requested by line management.

  • It is a condition of employment that staff will not disclose information obtained in the course of duties to unauthorized recipients. Staff must ensure confidentiality of personal data and secure restricted information; all staff must undergo appropriate data protection training as required.
  • All absence from work must be reported according to the University’s absence procedures and recorded on the HR system.
  • The University provides a safe, smoke-free environment. Smoking is not permitted on University premises except in designated areas.

Requirements

  • Qualifications: Education standard to GCSE level or equivalent; qualifications or equivalent experience in one or more of plastering, bricklaying, painting & decorating, electrical, plumbing.
  • Knowledge, Experience and Skills: Experience in a similar maintenance/service environment, or electrical or mechanical installation background. Competent IT skills (Windows, Microsoft Office & Outlook). Current driving license or equivalent mobility.
  • Additional requirements: Comfortable lifting and moving machinery and plant up to 25 kg. Ability to communicate at all levels. Proactive, quality-driven approach. Knowledge of working on older heritage buildings is desirable. Working knowledge of boiler equipment or heating controls/systems. Experience in a similar maintenance environment with ability to work in both clean and dirty environments. Ability to work at heights.
