The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) has been a vibrant community of artists since 1768, committed to championing artistic creativity and providing a platform for the dynamic exchange of ideas. As an independent and self-funded institution, we have the freedom to advocate for the visual arts and inspire wide participation in the creative process.

As the Artistic Director, you will lead the artistic vision and direction of the RA, shaping its exhibitions, programming, and cultural initiatives to maintain and enhance its position as a world-leading institution in the arts. You will work closely with the Royal Academicians, harnessing their talents to deliver transformative and commercially successful artistic programming.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the artistic vision and direction of the RA, shaping its exhibitions, programming, and cultural initiatives.
  • Develop a creative vision and artistic program that attracts a broad and diverse audience and drives significant commercial success.
  • Represent the RA as a spokesperson and advocate for the arts, engaging with media, donors, and the wider public.
  • Collaborate with artists, architects, curators, and stakeholders to deliver high-profile, innovative, and thought-provoking exhibitions and programs.
  • Oversee the RA's education programming and learning initiatives, ensuring they are inclusive, impactful, and aligned with the RA's artistic vision.
  • Forge and maintain strategic partnerships with international institutions, artists, architects, collectors, galleries, and cultural organisations globally.
  • Lead and inspire a team of curators, creative professionals, and other staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.
Person Specification:
  • Master's Degree in Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven track record of leadership in a major art institution, museum, or cultural organisation.
  • Strong curatorial expertise with a deep understanding of art history, contemporary art, and emerging trends.
  • Strategic vision and ability to translate that vision to engage stakeholders to deliver it.
  • Strong commercial mindset and experience managing complex budgets and securing funding for artistic initiatives.
  • Proven leadership abilities with a track record in building and creating high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts.
