Roxel is an Anglo‑French Company that designs, develops and manufactures a range of solid propellant rocket motors for use in tactical missiles. Its operations are spread across several sites in the UK and France and it has an annual turnover of about £250M and nearly 1000 staff, with 300 in the UK.

The Energetics Manufacturing Team are responsible for the manufacture and casting of high‑quality casting powder for use in cast double base rocket propellant to meet demanding production requirements. The Casting Technician is responsible for overseeing the casting of rocket motor charges ensuring it is carried out in a safe and controlled manner, on time, on cost and on quality. The successful candidate will work alongside other Casting Technicians within the team, as well as colleagues within the wider production/engineering teams to develop and manufacture high performance rocket motors and related systems and play a key part in the casting team training and development.

The candidate will also work closely on the research, development and understanding of key projects, to support current and future applications. The candidate will be expected to develop expertise of certain energetic materials and related casting processes within Roxel UK, with the ability to present this information to internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Be the technical lead and process expert on production casting activities on a day-to-day basis to safely achieve production targets.
  • Support Technical Authorities with the development and monitoring of propellant to meet energy, mechanical and ballistic requirements.
  • Develop understandings related to design principles of casting equipment, drawings and specifications.
  • Review methods and documentation to ensure compliance with configured standards.
  • Support, monitor and improve associated manufacturing processes.
  • Improve, drive efficiencies and standardise associated manufacturing processes.
  • Support the configuration of the COMAH safety report and offer continuous improvement to the processes.
  • Support managing materials (stocks, quality, performance, legislation) to meet strict design requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve material and related manufacturing problems.
  • Monitor material obsolescence and qualify the replacements.
  • Help develop and define future casting technology.
  • Train and develop team members, supporting performance reviews and skills matrix analysis are conducted and updated.
  • Carry out Risk and COSHH assessments.
  • Additional duties or tasks as requested by business requirements.

Experience and Background Qualifications:

Essential:

  • 5 GCSE’s at Level 4 or above or equivalent (incl Maths and English).
  • Degree in science or engineering discipline, ideally Engineering or Chemistry, or HNC/HND working towards a degree.

Desirable:

  • IOSH Managing Safely qualification or willingness to work towards.
  • Green Belt qualification or equivalent in Lean Manufacturing techniques or willingness to work towards.

Experience:

Essential:

  • Demonstrate previous proven experience of working within a laboratory or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong IT competencies with experience working with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word and Outlook) and MRP/MES Systems.
  • Demonstrate Leadership experience.

Desirable:

  • Managing within a Lean Culture e.g SQCDPI techniques, Kaizen, Kanban, 7 waste principles.
  • Working within a strong Health and Safety environment, carrying out risk and COSHH Assessments.
  • Experience of working within a COMAH environment.
  • Managing within an EN9100 or Quality Management System culture.
