The Role

In this supervisor role you will lead a high-performing Inorganic Chemistry team. You will take ownership of advanced instrumentation, including ICP-MS and CV-AFS, ensuring the delivery of high-quality analytical data to support major analytical chemistry projects. Being hands-on in the laboratory, you’ll play a key role in day-to-day laboratory operations, while also contributing to method development and quality systems. The laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility specialising in ultra-trace analysis and supports large-scale, long-term national monitoring initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analytical Leadership: Provide technical expertise across workflows, interpret complex datasets, and resolve anomalies to support client decision-making.
  • Instrumentation: Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot ICP-MS systems, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.
  • Method Development: Lead development, validation, and optimisation of analytical methods for environmental matrices in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Quality & Data Management: Maintain accredited quality systems (UKAS-aligned), complete proficiency testing, and ensure accurate LIMS data handling and review.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and train lab analysts, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment.

Skills & Experience

  • BSc in Chemistry or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong experience in an accredited analytical laboratory
  • Proven expertise with ICP-MS and CV-AFS instrumentation.
  • ICP Method development and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience working to accredited quality systems (e.g., UKAS/ ISO17025)
