Job Overview

As part of a team you will maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene within the care home, whilst ensuring a safe, comfortable environment at all times.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Key Tasks

  • Cleaning: Maintain the highest standards of efficiency and cleanliness within all areas of the care home; have a sound working knowledge of the safe use of equipment and help maintain the equipment in good, clean, working order; ensure correct storage of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Follow the Company’s policies and procedures, ensuring that working practice reflects the guidance; maintain fire safety awareness and follow procedures in the event of a fire.
  • Respect resident privacy and dignity when entering bedrooms; ensure personal respect for residents and their homes.
  • Have due regard and respect for residents’ personal information and belongings; ensure knowledge of chemicals used in the home and use in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions (e.g., COSHH and data sheets).
  • Clean en-suites, public toilets, baths, and hand basins daily (more often if necessary).
  • Water plants and remove dead flowers as needed.
  • Perform unpleasant cleaning duties with diplomacy to avoid distress or embarrassment to residents.
  • Follow cleaning schedules in line with Standard Infection Control Procedures.

2. Health and Safety

  • Work in a safe environment in accordance with Health and Safety at Work regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment by understanding and adhering to the company Health and Safety Policy and procedures.
  • Practice safe working practices within the home (e.g., domestic trolleys, chemicals, vacuum cables, mops not left unattended).
  • Comply with infection control policies and procedures; use appropriate hand hygiene and wear protective clothing such as gloves and aprons when required.
  • Take responsibility for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions.
  • Be aware of relevant Health and Safety legislation and undertake safety precautions accordingly.
  • Use sharps bins correctly and arrange collection and supply as needed.
  • Report faults, damaged furniture, faulty appliances, equipment or potential hazards to the Manager or Maintenance person.
  • Place all laundry in appropriate bags and ensure waste is disposed of in the correct bags and bins.
  • Report any illness of an infectious nature or accidents involving residents, colleagues, or self to the Home Manager or Person in Charge.

3. General Duties

  • Promote and protect the good reputation of the care home; greet visitors and answer the telephone politely, conveying messages to the appropriate person.
  • Wear an identification badge and the correct uniform; keep jewellery to a minimum (wedding band allowed) and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Maintain Cleaning Records daily.
  • Whistleblow if you witness bad practice or harm to a resident.
  • Keep confidential information secure and do not disclose it to third parties.
  • Attend staff meetings, mandatory training, and participate in supervision as required.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and relatives, and work collaboratively.
  • Undertake ongoing learning and professional development to maintain high standards of work, as outlined in the job description.
  • Undertake any other duties within the scope of this job description, at your normal place of work or any company location.

Employer Expectations Skills/Knowledge/Experience

  • Previous experience in a similar role would be an advantage but is not essential as training will be given.
