Roughan O’Donovan (ROD) is looking to recruit a hydrologist and hydraulic modeller with a minimum of three years’ relevant experience for a permanent role within our expanding water engineering team.

Job type: Permanent role – full-time, part-time and flexible working options

Location: Dublin, Cork or Leeds

You will join a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team with experience and expertise across a range of technical disciplines, including environmental science, ecology, hydrology, hydrogeology and transportation.

Duties

  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will undertake strategic flood risk assessments for statutory and non-statutory land-use plans in Ireland and the UK, including procurement of surveys, hydrological estimation and statistical analysis for gauged and ungauged catchments and attendance at public consultation events.
  • Undertake site walkover surveys with senior colleagues to identify key features to inform hydraulic modelling and hydrological assessments.
  • Undertake site-specific flood risk assessments for public and private developments in Ireland and the UK, including residential, commercial, industrial, education, healthcare and large-scale infrastructure development sectors.
  • Prepare Section 50 applications to the Office of Public Works (OPW).
  • Advise structures, earthworks/alignment and drainage teams on the sizing of bridge openings, culvert arrangements, road levels and outfall arrangements.
  • Liaise with transportation, environmental, geotechnical and structures colleagues to identify constraints and opportunities, improve routes, drainage requirements, flood defences, flood compensatory storage and coastal protection works.
  • Assist in the preparation of the brief of evidence for Oral Hearings.
  • Provide support at Oral Hearings.
  • Undertake hydrological assessments and 1D-2D hydraulic modelling using HEC-RAS, Flood Modeller, TUFLOW and Infoworks ICM amongst others.

Requirements

  • Honours degree in civil/environmental engineering (Level 8 in the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent).
  • Three+ years’ relevant experience.
  • Experience of hydrological estimation methodologies.
  • Experience of strategic flood risk assessment.
  • Experience of site-specific flood risk assessment.
  • Experience of 1D-2D flood modelling (rivers and watercourses) and ICM.
  • Good experience of QGIS to inform data processing, mapping and model preparation.
  • Ability to work in a team and/or independently.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Good report writing skills.
  • Fluent/highly proficient in spoken and written English.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in civil/environmental engineering (Level 9 in the National Framework of Qualifications or equivalent).
  • Experience and knowledge of river restoration policy and practice.
  • Experience in the preparation of Section 50 applications to the OPW.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Experience in the design of site specific and regional SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) strategies.
  • Knowledge of national, regional and local drainage policy (Ireland and UK).
  • Knowledge of Appropriate Assessment (AA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) processes.
  • Experience of constraints studies, options selection process, multicoloured manual/CBA process for flood alleviation schemes and large infrastructure projects in Ireland and the UK.
