Rotherwood Education are currently recruiting for a dedicated and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to work on a full-time basis in a supportive Primary school in the Nelson area. This is a long-term role due to start in September 2026 or sooner, with the potential to become a permanent position for the right candidate.

Position Details:

  • Location: Nelson, Lancashire
  • Start Date: September 2026 or sooner
  • Contract Type: Full-time, temp to perm
  • Daily Rate: £80 - £90 per day (dependent on experience)

About the Role:

The school is looking to appoint a committed Learning Mentor to support pupils in overcoming barriers to education and developing positive attitudes towards learning and behaviour. Working closely with the Behaviour Lead, the successful candidate will play a key role in providing targeted support for children who require additional help with behaviour, emotional regulation, engagement and learning behaviours across the school. This is a full-time, non-teaching role and is not suitable for part-time applicants.

The role will include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to help them overcome barriers to learning
  • Working closely with the Behaviour Lead to implement support strategies for pupils with behavioural, emotional or social needs
  • Carrying out regular pupil check-ins and providing mentoring support throughout the school day
  • Supporting pupils to develop positive learning behaviours, self-regulation and emotional resilience
  • Assisting with the delivery of behaviour support plans and individual programmes of support
  • Responding to behaviour incidents in line with school procedures and using restorative approaches where appropriate
  • Supporting class teachers and staff in promoting positive behaviour and engagement in lessons
  • Helping to develop rewards, incentives and positive reinforcement strategies
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and progress
  • Liaising with parents and carers, alongside school staff, to support pupil progress and wellbeing
  • Recording observations, progress and concerns in line with school procedures

The main focus of the role will be to support children whose low-level or persistent behaviours can affect their learning and the learning of others, helping them to engage positively with school life and classroom expectations.

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Have experience of working with children or young people in a school, pastoral, mentoring or support role
  • Have experience of supporting pupils with behavioural, emotional, social or additional learning needs
  • Be confident in building positive relationships with pupils, staff, parents and carers
  • Have a calm, patient and consistent approach to behaviour support
  • Be able to support pupils to develop self-confidence, resilience and positive learning behaviours
  • Have a good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team and under the direction of senior staff
  • Be committed to the wellbeing, progress and safeguarding of children and young people
  • Provide details of the last 2 references, covering the last 5 years’ work history
  • Possess a current DBS check or be prepared to apply for one as part of your registration
  • Be willing to complete a face-to-face registration and satisfy several checks
