Community Protection Unit – Environmental Health & Community Safety

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's Community Protection and Environmental Health Service as a Technical Support Officer. This varied role provides essential technical, administrative and customer support across a wide range of regulatory and enforcement functions, helping the Council deliver important statutory services that protect residents, businesses and communities throughout the borough. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting Environmental Health and Community Protection activities, while contributing to a significant programme of service improvement as the Council transitions to a new regulatory services management system.

Responsibilities

  • Working as part of a busy and supportive team, you will be the first point of contact for a range of customer enquiries, providing advice, information and signposting across services including:
    • Food Safety and Standards
    • Community Protection and Anti‑Social Behaviour
    • Pollution Control
    • Private Sector Housing and Property Licensing
    • Waste and Environmental Crime
    • Licensing and Animal Health
  • You will be responsible for gathering and analysing information, managing service records, maintaining databases, producing management information, supporting system developments and assisting with first‑stage investigative processes.
  • The role also includes triaging reports, collating intelligence and supporting enforcement officers by ensuring information is accurately recorded, maintained and available to support decision making.
  • As part of an ongoing service transformation programme, you will contribute to the implementation of a new regulatory services database, supporting activities such as data validation, testing, quality assurance and process improvement.

This presents an excellent opportunity to gain experience in service modernisation and business systems development while helping to deliver better outcomes for residents and businesses.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated and organised individual with experience in a customer‑focused administrative environment. You will have excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities. Experience of handling sensitive information, maintaining accurate records and working with a range of IT systems is essential.
