St Johns Hospice is a 10 bedded in patient unit based in Balby, Doncaster. Specialist palliative care services at St Johns Hospice provide complex symptom management, psychological support and end of life care to patients and their families within a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment.

We are seeking a Nursing Assistant with formal experience of working within a care environment; you should be passionate about providing high quality care and support and want to make a difference to our patients and their families at a difficult time in their lives. If you don't already have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant subject, RDaSH are offering this post alongside the opportunity for you to complete a Level 3 apprenticeship qualification relevant to your role. As an apprentice within RDaSH you will be given the opportunity to gain experience, learn work-related skills and obtain all the tools needed to thrive. An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. Around 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying. This leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Training will be provided to enable the Post holder to work with clients with complex and intensive needs on an individual basis.
  • Contributes to the assessment, implementation and delivery of individualised evidence-based care.
  • Provide feedback of current patient/service user status to appropriate members of the professional team.
  • Assist in the promotion and maintenance of individual patient/service user activities of daily living.
  • Assist the relevant professional during assessment/treatment/intervention where required.
  • Support the patient/service user to make use of available services and facilities.
  • Following Health and Safety regulations, promote a safe environment.
  • Contribute and participate within the Clinical Governance framework by attending team and unit meetings.
  • Report all accidents, incidents/untoward incidents as per policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times in accordance with Trust policies and national guidelines.

Person Specification:

  • Qualifications: Essential English and Maths at level 2 or equivalent (GCSE 9-4 or A*- C or functional skills level 2), NVQ Level 2 in a related subject, NVQ level 3 in related subject or willingness to undertake a relevant Level 3 Apprenticeship.
  • Experience: Essential Demonstrate a keen interest in caring for others, previous experience of caring for palliative patients in a clinical setting, previous experience of working as part of a team.
  • Knowledge: Essential Understand importance of maintaining confidentiality, an awareness of pressure area care.
  • Skills/Abilities: Essential Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively both face to face and in writing, able to support and reassure patients/carers in distress, basic IT skills, be able to communicate effectively with patients and relatives who have a life limiting illness.
  • Additional Requirements: Essential Exposure to emotional distress - care of terminally ill patients and patients that have progressive disease and their families/carers.
