We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Surrey Wheelchair Services to manage a specialist caseload working with individuals who have long‑term complex health, mobility, postural and social needs.

You will assess, prescribe and provide wheelchair and seating equipment to ensure safe, effective and person‑centred care.

The role is based mainly at the Woking site with occasional assessments at Redhill.

Experience in posture and seating (mobility/static) is required; experience with children, neuro, LD and rehabilitation is an advantage.

Knowledge of wheelchairs is desirable but full product training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

• Provide clinical leadership and expertise to the wheelchair services, working closely with service users, families and multidisciplinary teams.
• Supervise other members of the team up to Band 6 level.
• Work as an autonomous practitioner, managing a caseload of complex service users.
• Demonstrate clinical competence and best practice in all areas: triage, duty activities, clinical interventions, assessment of mobility, posture and pressure care needs, prescription, review, handover and set‑up of prescribed equipment, documentation, caseload management, outcome measures and medical device management.
• Maintain a safe clinic environment.
• Safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults in compliance with Ross Care safeguarding procedures.
• Carry out physical/postural assessments and interventions requiring kneeling, squatting, crouching, bending, twisting and maintaining awkward postures for short periods.
• Lift, carry or adjust wheelchairs and other equipment as required.

• Collaborate effectively with colleagues and external services to promote teamwork.
• Report to and work collaboratively with the Clinical Lead to manage demand, capacity and budget.
• Cover duties for the Clinical Lead when necessary.
• Participate in the leadership and performance monitoring of the clinical team.
• Conduct clinical supervision of junior members to meet HCPC registration requirements.
• Identify areas for service development, lead projects and implement improvements.
• Support the development and review of policies and standard operating procedures.
• Arrange, coordinate and attend clinics in community and school settings.

• Manage a highly complex caseload as a senior autonomous practitioner.
• Implement personal wheelchair budgets (PWB) for eligible users.
• Use outcome measures in assessments and work collaboratively to achieve user goals.
• Safeguard vulnerable users in strict adherence to procedure.
• Demonstrate statutory knowledge under the Mental Capacity Act concerning capacity and consent.
• Physical
• Perform physical postural assessments and interventions requiring sustained awkward positions.
• Assist users to transfer safely using appropriate equipment.
• Lift, carry or adjust wheelchairs and other equipment multiple times daily.
• Attend moving and handling training and adhere to Ross Care policies.
• Work in varied and sometimes unpleasant environmental conditions, including exposure to bodily fluids and adverse weather.
• Receive occasional verbal or physical aggression.
• Spend extended periods at computer or laptop.
• Drive regularly, managing busy and adverse driving conditions.

Educational

• Provide training, instruction and demonstrations to users and carers, supporting resource development.
• Train other therapists, offering shadowing and supervision opportunities.
• Support internal and external training programmes.
• Comply with Ross Care CPD and professional development arrangements.
• Attend required health and safety and other mandatory training.
• Support structured training opportunities, including apprenticeships and student placements.

Person Specification

Experience (Essential)

• Post‑registration experience working with patients with long‑term and deteriorating medical conditions.
• Knowledge of a range of medical conditions (e. g. respiratory, neuro, orthopaedic) and their implications for wheelchair prescription.

Experience (Desirable)

• Demonstrated ability to organise workload and adapt to competing priorities.
• Strong IT skills with Microsoft Office.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Effective strategies for coping with distressed situations and challenging behaviour.
• Understanding of risk assessment, safeguarding, data protection, health and safety, clinical governance and diversity issues.
• Knowledge and Skills (Essential)
• HCPC registration and enhanced DBS clearance.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive Ross Care vehicles.
• Experience of IT clinical notes.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge and Skills (Desirable)
• Membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy or the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
• Experience of Excel.

Qualifications (Essential)

• BSc or diploma in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
• Disclosure and Barring Service Check
