We’re looking for a skilled Financial Controller to oversee financial operations within a family business. This is a central leadership position within a small Head Office team driving 11 children’s early years nurseries across the Northeast. This is a hands‑on role covering payroll, management accounts, budgeting, systems maintenance and operational support. The financial controller ensures data integrity, strong financial controls, process efficiency, and supports both operations and the board with high‑quality reporting and analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead monthly payroll: rota imports, holiday pay checks, anomaly investigation, final review.
  • Produce monthly management accounts: journals, prepayments, accruals, depreciation, P&L/Bal Sheet updates, KPIs, commentary and board reporting.
  • Complete aged debt analysis and funding spread journals.
  • Weekly debt reconciliation through internal software platforms.
  • Review termly headcount, funding reconciliations and nursery plans accuracy.
  • Prepare annual accounts for external accountants and support full budgeting cycle (revenues, overheads, staffing ratios, cashflow, balance sheet).
  • Manage internal software with funding rates/session prices and holiday settings.
  • Support insurance renewal and ad‑hoc finance tasks including bank monitoring, deposits, funding queries, reporting, and manager support.
  • Act as Data Controller and Health & Safety Officer.
  • Manage and support a Finance and Payroll Administrator.
  • Provide weekly support to 11 Nursery Managers in their own finance and accounting.

  • Experience working within a family business organisation.
  • Strong financial control and management accounting experience.
  • Leadership experience to challenge and continue driving the business forward.
  • Confident with Payroll Software.
  • Excellent accuracy, organisation and problem‑solving skills.
  • Able to manage weekly, monthly and annual cycles in a fast‑moving environment.
  • Accounting qualifications preferred.
