The Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) is a UK technology institute for life sciences, funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). We work across disciplines, combining imaging tools with chemical and biological platforms to see life in new ways.
As a Post Doctoral Researcher, you will bring scientific knowledge and skills to deliver specific research projects or contribute independently to a team. This role aims to build scientific independence, develop new science and leadership skills, and establish a growing reputation externally. The water window X-ray microscope project is an EPSRC-funded collaboration between the University of Southampton, the Franklin, and the Central Laser Facility at Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. The project involves designing and constructing a lab-scale soft X-ray microscope for biological imaging using ultrafast lasers and coherent diffractive imaging techniques. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team constructing a new laser laboratory at Rutherford Appleton Labs on the Harwell Campus, working with laser scientists, physicists, chemists, computer scientists, and biologists to develop imaging techniques within a supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- This role involves operating a new ultrafast laser laboratory for biological imaging.
- You will work with the coherent X-ray source to develop imaging methods for biological systems, exploiting the particular advantages of the source.
- Plan and conduct experiments, analyze results, and deliver research outputs such as reports and patents.
- Contribute to wider projects within the team.
- Publish research findings in papers, patents, and presentations.
