The Rosalind Franklin Institute (the Franklin) is a technology institute established by the UK Government as a unique centre committed to advancing tools that are needed to transform healthcare in the future. The Institute brings together researchers in life and physical sciences, and engineering, to develop a spectrum of tools which we will use to image, interpret and intervene in biological systems. These insights will speed up the discovery of new medicines, help find new diagnostics and contribute to a deeper understanding of human health and disease.
As the Franklin has grown, so have our responsibilities around Health and Safety, Environment and Compliance (HSEC). This new role will enable and assist colleagues to co-ordinate activity across these important areas and will work within the Operations Team and across the whole Institute to ensure that we have rigorous processes in place to monitor key activities and important assurance actions arising from Health and Safety (H&S) meetings, audits and risk assessments.
The role of the HSEC Coordinator involves a variety of responsibilities aimed to ensure compliance with Health and Safety and environmental regulations. With a primary focus around Health and Safety, this role supports the H&S Advisor and also works closely with the Facilities Team, Quality, Human Resources and Laboratory Managers.
As a Health, Safety, Environment and Compliance (HSEC) Coordinator you will:
- Health and Safety
- Work with the H&S Advisor and Laboratory Managers to ensure staff are familiar with health and safety risks, controls and emergency procedures.
- Support audits and inspections, incident reporting and preparing reports and monitoring resolution of any issues arising by collaborating with Laboratory Managers and staff.
- Assist in preparing Health and Safety documentation (Safety Codes, COSHH, Risk Assessments etc.) and promoting health, safety and compliance within the Institute.
- Carry out site H&S Inductions, including site risks, for new employees, contractors and visitors, and monitor/manage contractor access.
- Assist with maintaining fire procedures, including drills and regular check on all equipment in conjunction with Building Fire Manager.
- Support the Health and Safety work plan.
- Actively participate in H&S Committee meetings.
- Work with the responsible person to monitor the correct disposal of hazardous waste in line with policy and regulations.
- Assist in collating environmental and sustainability data, ensuring adherence to environmental legislation.
- General
- Maintain a database of all prior audit recommendations and solutions.
- Assist with the preparation of statistical and analysis reports across the areas.
- Ensure proper filing and document control of all HSEC records, including training and certification.
- Training
- Write and oversee regular reviews and issue of documents for compliance training.
- Be responsible for high quality training records/registers to ensure compliance for regulatory bodies and cross Institutional reporting.
- Co-ordinate H&S training, monitoring completion and reporting for committees.
- Arrange regular training of First Aiders and Fire Marshalls.
- Other Duties
- Support scientists and visitors with ad hoc requests.
- Be aware of, and exercise personal and Institute responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and other related matters.
- Carry out any other duties as required by the H&S Advisor to deliver the wider service to the Franklin within the skills of the post holder.
