The Mission

We are Roots. We are the reason that hundreds of thousands of gardens across the UK are looking greener than they did five years ago. We aren’t a fragile start-up anymore. We’re a profitable, 50-person team with a serious operation behind us. We’ve spent the last few years (and over 2,000 hours of development) building a beast of a website with external agencies & freelancers. Now, we’re ready for the next chapter. We want to bring the brainpower in-house. We’re looking for our first dedicated Product Manager to take the keys, own the roadmap, and help us build the best online plant buying experience on the planet.

The Role

This isn’t about moving tickets around a Trello board. This is about Strategy with a capital S. Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll be the bridge between the mud (our nursery) and the code (our website). We have a great platform; your job is to make it sing. You’ll stop us from building "shiny things" and start building things that actually help our customers and our warehouse team.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Making the Website Irresistible
    • The Numbers: You’ll wake up thinking about how to turn visitors into obsessed plant parents. You own the big stats: Conversion rate, Average Order Value, and getting people to come back for "just one more plant."
    • The Experience: You’ll run experiments and tweaks to smooth out the bumps in the road. If a customer gets confused at checkout, you’re the one who fixes it.
    • The Cool Stuff: We want to launch new ways to shop (think interactive tools and engagement features). You’ll be the one figuring out how we replicate the magic of walking through a nursery, but on a screen.
  • Greasing the Wheels (The Back End)
    • It’s Not Just Pretty Pictures: A pretty website is useless if the warehouse can’t ship the orders. You’ll be diving into our internal tech—making sure our packers, pickers, and planters have the digital tools they need to work faster and smarter.
    • Connecting the Dots: You’ll make sure Shopify talks fluently to our inventory systems and logistics partners. You are the guardian of our tech stack.
  • Captaining the Ship
    • Taking Ownership: We’re moving from "agency-led" to "product-led." You’ll define how we build things. No more ad-hoc panic coding; just a solid, sensible roadmap that you define.
    • Herding Cats: You’ll manage our developers (internal or external) and translate "business speak" into "developer speak" (and vice versa) so that everyone knows what they’re building and why.

Who You Are

  • You Speak Fluent Shopify: This is non-negotiable. You know the platform inside out. You know when to use an App, when to build custom, and when to just leave it alone.
  • You’ve Scaled Up: You aren’t looking for a blank canvas. You know how to take a busy, living, breathing website and upgrade it while the engine is still running.
  • You Love the "Boring" Stuff: You get just as excited about saving the warehouse team 20 seconds per order as you do about a new homepage banner. You know that good ops is good business.
  • You Follow the Data: You don’t guess. You look at the analytics, you look at the heatmaps, and you make decisions based on what’s actually happening, not what we think is happening.

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • The Sweet Spot: We’re big enough to have resources and stability (50 staff!), but small enough that you can still turn the ship. You won’t be buried in bureaucracy.
  • Real Impact: You’ll see the results of your work immediately—whether it’s a sales spike on the site or a high-five from the warehouse manager because you fixed a bug that was driving them crazy.
  • The Product: Let’s be honest, selling plants is better than selling software subscriptions. We sell joy in a box.

Ready to help us grow? If you want to take ownership of a massive Shopify platform and build something special, we want to hear from you. Apply now.
