Job Description
This is a skilled fire fighter position involving extinguishing fires, responding to emergency calls, and performing emergency medical techniques to protect life and property.
The role requires the ability to act independently, manage fire scenes, and maintain equipment and public relations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Respond to fire alarms, analyze the scene, operate pumps, search for victims, provide emergency care, extinguish fires, and ensure the area is safe before leaving.
- Respond to emergency calls in both fire and non‑fire situations, perform emergency medical techniques, and prepare follow‑up reports.
- Restore and maintain trucks and equipment to ensure they are operational and ready for emergencies.
- Participate continuously in educational programs, training, and practice drills; complete continuing education requirements and maintain EMS certifications.
- Maintain public relations, provide fire prevention classes, conduct fire station tours, and perform housekeeping duties around the station.
- Assist with annual fire safety inspections based on knowledge and training.
- Interpret and enforce codes and ordinances, issue written warnings, and issue court appearance tickets for violations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within knowledge, skills, and abilities set forth by the Fire Chief.

- Knowledge of modern fire‑fighter techniques and methods, city geography, and the street system.

- Ability to operate firefighting equipment and apparatus, including truck, hydraulics, hoses, and ladders; ability to carry equipment over 70 pounds and lift victims of 120 pounds.
- Possess Hazardous Materials Certification (Operations level).
Qualifications
- Minimum of 18 years of age; high school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Valid Hazardous Materials Certification (Operations Level).
- Current ARC or AHA CPR certification (BLS), AED, and First Aid certification.
- U. S. citizenship required.
- No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories; no outstanding warrants or fugitive status.
- Pass an extensive background check; false or misleading information will result in disqualification.
- Preferred Applicant
- Completed Firefighter I and II, valid state paramedic license, Hazmat Operations, and CPAT exam.
- Or completed Firefighter I and II, valid state EMT license, CPAT exam, and current enrollment in a state‑approved paramedic program to complete within two years of hire.
- Or licensed paramedic in Michigan, passed CPAT exam, and will complete Firefighter I and II during employment.
