The RH&DR is a historic narrow-gauge railway in Kent, England. The railway operates on a 15-inch gauge track and features historic and modern elements with a range of stations and activities for visitors. The railway employs around 35 paid staff supported by almost 200 volunteers.

The RH&DR is seeking a hands-on Locomotive & Rolling Stock Manager to lead the maintenance and development of its historic fleet. You will manage a small engineering team and take responsibility for the safe, reliable and compliant operation of all locomotives and rolling stock. This role suits a practical, self-disciplined engineer who is comfortable working in the workshop, loco shed and office, and who can balance heritage authenticity with modern engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage engineering staff maintaining locomotives and rolling stock
  • Coordinate maintenance to ensure fleet availability for operations
  • Ensure compliance with the Safety Management System and health & safety legislation
  • Maintain workshops, records, procedures and RAMS
  • Manage spares, stores and contractors
  • Support training and development of staff and volunteers
  • Provide engineering support across the railway
About YouEssential
  • Engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong workshop skills (turning, milling, fitting, fabrication)
  • Leadership and organisational skills
  • Good knowledge of COSHH, LOLER, PUWER and risk assessments
  • Strong communication skills and IT competence
  • Full UK driving licence and physically fit
Desirable
  • Health & Safety qualification (IOSH / NEBOSH)
  • Steam or diesel locomotive experience
  • Project management experience
