Are you an experienced HGV Driver looking for a role within Environmental Services? We are currently recruiting for HGV Drivers Waste Collections / Street Cleansing to join the Waste and Street Care team. This is a mobile role working as part of a waste collection crew, operating refuse collection vehicles, mechanical sweepers and other specialist vehicles to support waste, recycling and street cleansing services across the borough.

The Role

As an HGV Driver Waste Collections / Street Cleansing, you will be responsible for:

  • Driving and operating refuse collection vehicles (RCV), mechanical sweepers and grab lorries safely.
  • Working as part of a crew carrying out:
    • Household waste collections
    • Recycling collections
    • Food waste collections
    • Garden waste collections
    • Trade waste collections
    • Bin deliveries and collections
    • Street cleansing operations
  • Completing daily work schedules provided by the Waste and Street Care Supervisors.
  • Ensuring any issues preventing completion of work are reported promptly.
  • Providing excellent customer service to residents and members of the public.
  • Completing all required paperwork and returning documentation to the operational office.
  • Carrying out vehicle checks, reporting defects, incidents and accidents where required.
  • Using in-cab route management software and completing collection information accurately.
  • Ensuring assisted collections are completed and bins/containers are returned safely.
  • Ensuring missed collections are completed within required timescales.
  • Operating mechanical sweepers safely while considering pedestrians and other road users.
  • Changing mechanical sweeper brushes when required.
  • Operating a grab lorry safely in line with manufacturer guidance.
  • Assisting with vehicle cleaning and maintaining a clean working environment.
  • Supporting winter maintenance duties including gritting and snow clearance.
  • Assisting with emergency response activities, including flooding and other borough emergencies.
  • Undertaking bank holiday and seasonal waste collection duties when required (additional payment provided).
  • Completing any training required to support service delivery.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

Essential Requirements:

  • Full, clean UK driving licence.
  • HGV Class 2 driving licence.
  • Valid Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card.
  • Experience working as part of a team.
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Experience completing paperwork, vehicle inspections and reporting defects/incidents.
  • Flexible approach to working hours.
  • Good customer service skills and a professional attitude.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • A proactive approach with the ability to use initiative and good judgement.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience using in-cab route management systems.
  • Experience driving left-hand drive vehicles.
  • Experience operating a grab lorry.
  • Experience operating mechanical sweepers.
  • Experience supporting or motivating team members.
  • Manual handling experience.

Working Environment

This is an outdoor, physically active role involving:

  • Driving HGV vehicles.
  • Working outside throughout the year in all weather conditions.
  • Manual handling and assisting with waste collection activities.
  • Working around vehicles, equipment and members of the public.

Equipment Used:

  • Heavy Goods Vehicles (RCV and mechanical sweeper).
  • Grab lorry.
  • Company tablet / in-cab technology.
  • Route management systems.

Hours & Location

Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern: Mobile role

Compliance Requirements:

  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • HGV Class 2 Licence
