Site Engineer – Civils

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Salary: Β£33,000 - Β£35,000 per annum (Subject to Experience)

Role Overview

As Site Engineer, you will be responsible for Trainee Engineers, operatives and subcontractors, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.

You will report directly to the Civils Construction Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for setting out all works in a consistent and understandable manner.
  • Ensure all employees are carrying out works as per drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure Quality Procedures and Check Sheets are completed for concrete works, drainage, paving and tarmac works.
  • Agree weekly measures with labour-only subcontractors.
  • Ensure subcontractors are managed effectively on site to avoid unnecessary costs.
  • Order materials including kerbs, drainage and channels, reinforcing steel and associated products.
  • Provide delivery dates and procurement programmes to ensure materials are purchased competitively.
  • Liaise with the Site Supervisor and Construction/Works Manager regarding labour and plant requirements.
  • In conjunction with the Site Foreman, collate dayworks and site instructions to ensure agreements for additional works are captured and managed weekly.
  • Ensure the latest site drawings are available, correctly filed and that superseded drawings are removed.
  • Assist in the preparation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
  • Manage technical queries and maintain a query log.
  • Assist in preparing progress reports for client meetings.
  • Ensure site files and legal documentation are maintained correctly.
  • Manage concrete testing requirements.
  • Compile Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
  • Assist with monthly valuations and maintain supporting records as required.
  • Liaise with the design team to ensure information is available ahead of construction activities.
  • Identify value engineering opportunities where appropriate.
  • Support operational performance improvements.
  • Update the Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan.
  • Ensure completed works are signed off by the client.
  • Support and mentor team members to assist with their professional development.

You must work efficiently and safely in accordance with company procedures, training and Health & Safety requirements.

Strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.

You should be capable of working independently, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines while maintaining excellent attention to detail.

A professional approach, appearance and attitude are expected at all times.

Following induction, you will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of company procedures, values and reporting structures, and notify management immediately of any visits from regulatory or enforcement bodies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Accredited Engineering Degree, typically Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, Mechanical, Electrical or Building Services Engineering.
  • Working towards or holding professional membership with a recognised institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Experience & Skills

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of project profitability.

  • Strong technical knowledge.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Strong organisational and management skills.

Desirable

  • Previous experience within the civil engineering or construction sector.
