About the Opportunity

Our client is a well-established and highly respected Groundworks and Civil Engineering contractor operating across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join their team. This is a hybrid role, combining office-based responsibilities in the Welwyn Hatfield area with regular visits to multiple construction sites across Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties. The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting and maintaining a positive safety culture throughout the business.

Candidates with a background in Groundworks, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure, or Construction will be particularly well suited to this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) compliance across the business.
  • Develop, implement and continually improve health and safety policies, procedures and management systems.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety assessments across multiple active construction projects.
  • Ensure compliance with current UK legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations and other relevant industry standards.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and non-conformances, producing detailed reports and recommendations.
  • Support operational teams with risk assessments, method statements (RAMS) and safe systems of work.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and training sessions to employees, subcontractors and site management teams.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, external auditors and senior management regarding health and safety matters.
  • Monitor and report on key HSE performance indicators and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and encourage best practice throughout all levels of the organisation.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation relating to audits, inspections, incidents and training.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety Manager, HSE Manager or Senior Health & Safety Advisor role within the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction industry best practice.
  • Experience conducting site audits, inspections and incident investigations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with site teams, management and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and reporting skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to sites across Hertfordshire and surrounding counties.

Desirable

  • Experience within Groundworks, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure or General Construction projects.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
  • Membership of IOSH and/or working towards Chartered status.
  • Experience managing health and safety management systems.
  • Environmental management knowledge would be advantageous.
