About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established and highly respected Groundworks and Civil Engineering contractor operating across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to join their team. This is a hybrid role, combining office-based responsibilities in the Welwyn Hatfield area with regular visits to multiple construction sites across Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties. The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting and maintaining a positive safety culture throughout the business.
Candidates with a background in Groundworks, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure, or Construction will be particularly well suited to this opportunity.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all aspects of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) compliance across the business.
- Develop, implement and continually improve health and safety policies, procedures and management systems.
- Conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety assessments across multiple active construction projects.
- Ensure compliance with current UK legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations and other relevant industry standards.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses and non-conformances, producing detailed reports and recommendations.
- Support operational teams with risk assessments, method statements (RAMS) and safe systems of work.
- Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and training sessions to employees, subcontractors and site management teams.
- Liaise with clients, regulatory bodies, external auditors and senior management regarding health and safety matters.
- Monitor and report on key HSE performance indicators and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Promote a proactive safety culture and encourage best practice throughout all levels of the organisation.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation relating to audits, inspections, incidents and training.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Previous experience in a Health & Safety Manager, HSE Manager or Senior Health & Safety Advisor role within the construction industry.
- Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and construction industry best practice.
- Experience conducting site audits, inspections and incident investigations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with site teams, management and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organisational and reporting skills.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel regularly to sites across Hertfordshire and surrounding counties.
Desirable
- Experience within Groundworks, Civil Engineering, Infrastructure or General Construction projects.
- NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
- Membership of IOSH and/or working towards Chartered status.
- Experience managing health and safety management systems.
- Environmental management knowledge would be advantageous.
