An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Manufacturing Engineer – ESC to join the team in the state-of-art Rolls-Royce Derwent (Control Systems) facility in Solihull. You will work within the Aerospace Procurement team responsible for procuring high-integrity, harsh environment engine control systems and hydro-mechanical products supporting over 300 customers worldwide.
In this role, you will govern the execution of Manufacturing Engineering activities in the External Supply Chain to assure the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of manufacturing processes and/or methods of manufacture which are capable of meeting and continuing to meet business and customer requirements for safety, quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time (SQCD).
You will assess the capability of manufacturing suppliers and support source selection and approval in the supply chain.
What you will be doing:
- Working collaboratively with the external supply chain to resolve technical issues, problems and arisings related to the production method in a structured way, meeting requirements for safety, quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time (SQCD).
- Developing and maintaining effective relationships with suppliers, ensuring requirements are understood and coaching suppliers where required to deliver successful outcomes in line with Rolls-Royce requirements and commitments.
- Ensuring manufacturing processes are capable of achieving and sustaining the design definition, and that processes are followed so that our products and those of our suppliers conform to their specification.
- Rigorously raising, investigating and resolving safety-related issues.
- Promoting a culture of zero defects within the external supply chain, working with suppliers to reduce risk and drive product Right First Time.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant company, legislative and technical policies and standards, including RRMS, SABRe, Export Control and Intellectual Property requirements.
- Ensuring the application of manufacturing process controls within your area of accountability, with authorisation subject to appropriate delegation, for example FAIR approval.
- Identifying and developing opportunities within the supply chain for new or improved manufacturing processes, digital systems and technologies to meet current and future requirements.
- Planning and managing activities including schedules, resources and costs, gaining buy-off and communicating current status to relevant stakeholders.
- Ensuring issues and risks are resolved to meet project timescales.
- Working collaboratively with the external supply chain to develop, implement, validate, maintain and continuously improve manufacturing processes, digital systems and/or methods of manufacture capable of meeting and continuing to meet requirements for safety, quality, cost, delivery rate and lead time.
- Capturing, analysing and using data to demonstrate and improve the current and future capability of manufacturing processes.
- Where relevant, reviewing the Technical Package for acceptability.
- Working with suppliers to drive manufacturing processes towards identified consistent best practice, leveraging the knowledge of Manufacturing Engineering Commodity Leaders and Manufacturing Process Owners.
- Working with interfacing teams and local experts to ensure technical aspects of manufacturing processes and digital systems are understood and accounted for as required.
- Capturing and utilising lessons learnt, identifying, documenting and sharing best practice, including through participation in relevant Communities of Practice.
- Attending IPT meetings, representing the whole value stream for owned part(s) and communicating a consolidated view of Manufacturing Engineering plans, current status and issues requiring escalation.
- Continuously developing your knowledge and experience to meet the required competencies for the role and increase effectiveness in undertaking existing and new activities.
- Providing coaching and technical support to others within your area of competence.
- Raising concerns relating to Health, Safety & Environmental standards within the supplier.
Position Qualifications:
- Professionally qualified Engineer, for example UK minimum HND/Foundation Degree or other national equivalent. Or equivalent demonstratable experience in the field.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes relevant to the Control Systems business, including precision machining and special processing.
- Ability to apply engineering principles to manufacturing problems, including root-cause analysis and problem solving.
- Highly motivated with excellent interpersonal skills and the drive to deliver within a challenging, low volume, highly regulated production environment.
- Understanding of engineering drawings, specifications, requirements and configuration control.
- General awareness of Manufacturing Systems and enabling software tools relevant to the business.
- Understanding of Manufacturing Engineering processes relevant to the role.
- Working knowledge of relevant quality management systems and aerospace safety-critical requirements.
Preferred Requirements:
- Recognised national or international engineering accreditation, for example UK IEng or CEng, where available.
- Experience of working with an external manufacturing supply chain and supporting supplier capability.
- Experience of developing, implementing, validating and improving manufacturing processes and/or methods of manufacture.
- Experience in managing change within a complex manufacturing environment.
- Experience of working collaboratively with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams to resolve technical issues.
- Experience of planning and managing Manufacturing Engineering activities, including schedule, resource, cost and risk.
