A vacancy has arisen in the Operations Department for a Post Irradiation Examination Technician. This position involves the remote handling and examination of post irradiated nuclear fuel. This is an exciting opportunity to join the operations teams on a permanent shift basis to perform this important role that will keep our submarine fleet at sea now and in the future.

The Submarines sector of Rolls-Royce has been providing power systems expertise to the Royal Navy’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines since the early 1960s. At the Vulcan site we have been leading the way by operating full-scale prototypes of the Royal Navy’s Nuclear submarine plants as the lead of class. As a site we have been involved in the trials, testing and data collection across all the reactor cores designed and developed for the Ministry of Defence.

As part of the Vulcan site Fuel handling Team, this Vulcan grade 7 (after qualifying, starting at grade 5 depending on experience) role provides a number of benefits, including a competitive salary and bonus, and other long-term incentives in addition to full support with further career development. This is a permanent shift position which attracts an addition shift allowance.

What you will be doing

Key accountabilities of the role include:

  • Responsible for conducting PIE operations in the onsite facilities.
  • Responsible for Nuclear safety of the SNM.
  • Working to Nuclear procedures and other controlled documentation.
  • Carry out Fuel Moves activities for export and import of SNM.
  • Carry out mentoring and training of other team members.
  • Responsible for your safety and the others around you.

Who we’re looking for

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Successfully completed a relevant apprenticeship to level 3.
  • Have SC clearance or be able to achieve this.
  • Have the ability to qualify as a Pond Authorised Person and pass the PIE Technician’s requirements.
  • A level of academic qualification is an advantage but not required.
  • Nuclear experience is beneficial although training will be given.
