We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to join the Nuclear Facility Engineering (NFE) Team within the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business in Derby. Our Submarines Business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems in support of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.

As the EC&I Engineer, you'll enjoy a varied and rewarding role allowing you to take design and modifications through the full engineering lifecycle. You will also be partnering with and leading suppliers to ensure on-time delivery of projects. You will ensure the Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) aspects of the design, build and commissioning are appropriate for the functional and safety requirements of the facilities.

What you will be doing:

  • Act as 'Intelligent Customer' for Instrumentation & Control aspects of the facility design, directing and coordinating these areas of work by RR and partners in support of new facility and existing facility upgrade design, construction/installation and commissioning.
  • Model at facility level the control design following Internal User Requirements, technical specs, Functional Design Spec, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and handover documentation.
  • Defining the Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) functional requirements cascading the requirements from key safety inputs to ensure safety case compliance.
  • Performing technical peer reviews of Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) documents produced by other engineers in the team.
  • Read and interpret machinery and plant drawings, electrical schematics, maintenance manuals, and parts catalogues to enable customer requirements to be met.

Position Qualifications:

  • Experience of seeing projects through full lifecycle from requirements, design, detailing and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of Instrumentation and Control design, distribution systems and system design, Safety Case construction and Nuclear Safety requirements placed on systems.
  • Experience and knowledge of Programmable Industrial Control Systems including SCADA and DCS and Profibus, Profinet and ASI Network Protocols.
  • Knowledge of safety related control systems - BS 61508, 61511, 61513 with a thorough understanding of fault detection techniques including utilising Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Design and safety principles of devices, nuclear safety, Hardware logic, SIL systems and Safety Classification.
  • Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I), Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification although experience and capability will be taken into consideration.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don't currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
