A unique opportunity has arisen for an Aircraft Concept Evaluation Engineer to join our Aircraft Evaluation team in Derby. The team is part of the Whole Aircraft Group in Platform System Analysis, and the Group provides aircraft evaluation and flight operations engineering capability to the business. In this role, you will analyse whole aircraft characteristics and requirements to ensure competitiveness of new engine designs. You will create preliminary views of competitive positions of aircraft and engines in terms of payload capability, fuel burn, economics, forecast customer thrust usage.

We are looking for an individual who will perform analyses and actively seek opportunities to improve our aircraft conceptual evaluation capability which influence engine design and operation.

What you will be doing:

  • You will assess the performance of whole aircraft concepts, and you will work with various stakeholders within our Civil Aerospace Business mainly across Engineering and Customer Team functions.
  • Assess overall performance of aircraft concepts and integrate powerplant solutions to ensure top level aircraft requirements are met.
  • Integrate with engine project teams, sales and marketing, systems engineering, environmental specialists, and sub-systems design to evaluate engine design at aircraft level.
  • Synthesize and integrate multidisciplinary information regarding aircraft design, performance and operation and actively collaborate in the evolution of engine design throughout the various development phases.
  • Perform technical studies on vehicle performance of new and existing aircraft, ranging from high level competitive assessments to detail flight segment analysis.
  • Develop and improve aircraft performance and conceptual evaluation methods and tools.
  • Provide consultancy service to all parts of the aerospace business and develop methods and tools to enable the assessment and understanding of aircraft performance and operation.
  • Use your aircraft performance understanding in support of a wide range of tasks within the Whole Aircraft Group, including campaign support, engine lifing assessments and customer engagements.

Who we are looking for:

  • Experience of assessing the performance of whole aircraft concepts.
  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience of aircraft evaluation, performance, and operation.
  • Enthusiasm and knowledge of commercial aviation landscape, from commuter to widebody aircraft.
  • Understanding of gas turbine performance fundamentals.
  • Ability to understand and synthesize information from numerous sources into a consistent argument.
  • Good communication and presentation skills, and be comfortable discussing with people at all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to deal with different stakeholders and subjects.
  • Working knowledge of one or more programming languages (C#, Matlab, Python, SQL).
