Job Description

NDT Development Engineer (UT/ET) – Submarines

Full Time

Derby

We are currently looking to recruit a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Development Engineer, within our ever-growing team. You will be responsible for the design, development and deployment of advanced automated ultrasonic (UT) and eddy current (ET) inspection techniques, including state-of-the-art Phased Array Ultrasonic (PAUT) and Eddy Current Array (ECA) bespoke inspection capabilities for use on naval nuclear reactor plant components.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is one of the most enduring and iconic brands in the world and has been at the forefront of innovation for over a century. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount.

We are proud to be a force for progress, powering, protecting and connecting people everywhere.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future and we need people like you to come and join us on this journey.

This role is situated in the Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Development team that sits within Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Services (IMRS), in the Services Deliver Business Unit (DBU).

We’ll provide an environment of caring and belonging where you can be yourself. An inclusive, innovative culture that invests in you, gives you access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

This role involves working across the full NDE inspection cycle – from design to deployment. You will have the opportunity to use cutting-edge probe technology and software, including practical trials and modelling where appropriate. Training will be provided to enable you to develop as an individual and gain vital technical experience across a wide range of inspection capabilities.

What We Offer

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

What You Will Be Doing

This role allows the unique opportunity to work up close with various naval nuclear reactor plant components, pre-service, in-service and post-service. You will also get the chance to:

  • Operate as part of a close-knit team with technical excellence and customer satisfaction high on the agenda and be responsible for developing and implementing new methods of NDE, using bespoke remotely operated machines.
  • You will be required to travel away from home to support field deployments at a variety of sites including Barrow-in-Furness shipyard, naval bases at Devonport and Faslane, and Vulcan Naval Test Reactor Establishment. This is normally no more than 2 weeks at a time and typically less than 25% of yearly requirement. A valid driving license will be required.
  • During deployments you will typically be required to support 12-hour shift working on a 24/7 basis, including weekends and statutory holidays when required.
  • You may be exposed to difficult working conditions and will be required to be physically capable enough to move in and around the products (in line with H&S policy).

Who We’re Looking For

At Rolls-Royce we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. These principles form the behaviours that guide us and are an essential component of our assessment process. They are the fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

We are looking to recruit at all levels. To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Experience in the operation of remotely operated Automated Ultrasonic & Eddy Current Testing systems or similar would be favourable.
  • A demonstrable ability to work in a highly technical environment, in multidisciplinary teams and to tight deadlines.
  • The ability to produce clear, concise and accurate technical reports.
  • Less experienced candidates with strong academic qualifications are encouraged to apply. Rolls-Royce actively encourages career growth and training is available to enable employees to reach the required skill levels and attain any necessary professional qualifications.
  • A degree in Science, Technology Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Professional qualifications in NDT are beneficial (e.g. PCN, SNT, ASNT, MIPS, GUIDE), with the ideal candidate qualified in UT and ET techniques.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives which are crucial to innovation and problem solving. We believe the more diverse perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.
