An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Welder within the IMRS (Inspection Maintenance and Repair Services) Welding Team in Derby. IMRS forms part of the Services Delivery Business Unit within Submarines. As the Field Service Welder you will join our busy welding team. The Welding team is responsible for developing and deploying tailored welding solutions to support the in-service maintenance of the UK submarine fleet, as well as support to submarine design and build programmes.

As the Welding Technician you will be based from our site in Derby and will be deployed to sites across the UK so shift work will be expected; however, this is rewarded with overtime payments and enhanced shift premiums. This role would suit a Welder with experience of Manual TIG Welding Stainless Steel.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Development of welding techniques & technology to optimise weld parameters and achieve plant weld quality.
  • Deliver in house or on-site practical welding services supporting production, repair and maintenance activities.
  • Perform critical welds in line with nuclear quality standards (ASME, ISO, DGS and RRP) whilst ensuring full compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, WPS and specifications to perform complex welding tasks accurately.
  • Ensure full traceability and documentation of welding activities is completed.
  • Participate in procedure development and qualification (PQR/WPQR) in support of new welding method development.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, complying with nuclear site rules, risk assessments, method statements and permit-to-work systems.

Position Qualifications:

  • NVQ Level 3 Engineering / Welding Apprenticeship.
  • Experience and competent using the following manual welding processes: MMA / SMAW manual welding processes, TIG / GTAW manual welding processes.
  • Experience with Orbital welding would be advantageous.
  • Must be able to weld a variety of materials for example Stainless, Carbon Steel, Monel & Inconel (Desired).
  • Good understanding of ISO quality requirements.
  • Able to undertake manual welding in several welding orientations.
  • Ability to read and follow welding procedures with a good understanding of health and safety working practices.
  • Good understanding of quality and process control with respect to welding.

Shifts and Travel:

  • Undertake 12-hour shift working patterns as required, including weekends.
  • Be prepared to work at site for long periods (typically 2 weeks).

NOTE: Mandatory practical weld test(s) will be conducted to assess your competency level with the above requirements.
