Stress Engineer in England

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Rolls‑Royce in Bristol and help safeguard the mechanical integrity of our engines across several Defence Programmes including New Product Introduction (NPI). Stress engineers ensure the integrity of our products, predicting mechanical behaviour of components and sub‑systems, supporting the Design function, and addressing various failure mechanisms such as proof, ultimate, fatigue, creep and more. The role influences all stages of the design cycle to guarantee robust, requirement‑compliant designs, ongoing optimisation, product service life, and component disposal.

What You Will Be Doing

• Conduct mechanical design and analysis, selecting, generating, and developing numerical models, applying numerical calculation methods, implementing boundary conditions, verifying, validating, and analysing numerical model calculations, and promoting continuous improvements to tools, methods, and processes.
• Resolve problems through evaluative judgement, analysing factual information from multiple sources, interpreting results, and identifying effective solutions by applying technical knowledge and engineering judgement.
• Conduct mechanical experiments, preparing experiment specifications for test rigs and engines, supervising and supporting experiments, ensuring safe execution, plausibly checking results, analysing and interpreting test data, and comparing with analytical and/or empirical models.
• Lead defined technical packages/investigations as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering against programme milestones within agreed cost, timescale, and quality requirements.

Who We’re Looking For

• Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a STEM subject (or regional equivalent) with experience in a mechanical, aeronautical, electrical, or controls environment. Prior materials or mechanical analyst background and interest in career growth as a mechanical analyst is preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design assessment methodologies, including static and dynamic stress analysis, fracture and fatigue assessment, finite element stress techniques (ANSYS or ABAQUS preferred), and complex testing of assemblies, components, and materials.
• Understanding of material behaviour, crack propagation, contact, thermo‑mechanical fatigue, and statistics.
• Understanding of cross‑discipline engineering concepts, including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering, and product definition.
• Experience with novel designs and problems, ability to work outside established technical processes and develop them as required.
