Electrical Engineer – Power Electronics

Job Summary
Rolls‑Royce is seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineer to join our team to deliver cutting‑edge power electronic solutions that support the company’s electrification and low‑carbon strategies. The role will involve design, development and testing of complex power electronics conversion systems ranging from tens of kW up to 1 MW. The successful candidate will own projects from concept through to testing and commissioning.
What You Will Be Doing
- Act as a technical PoC for power electronic systems involved in AC‑to‑DC, DC‑to‑AC, DC‑to‑DC conversion and solid‑state power controllers.
- Develop optimum power electronic solutions that meet the requirements of the wider electrical power system, taking into account power quality, EMC, protection, and interaction with other system components.
- Take full ownership of solutions from concept through design, testing and final installation, covering electrical, thermal and mechanical disciplines.
- Present solutions at design review gates and interface with internal and external customers as required.
- Drive innovation to improve on existing methods, capture IP and direct longer‑term research activities at university technology centres.
- Mentor junior power electronics engineers and collaborate across teams to ensure optimal system solutions.
- Stay current on advances in power electronics technology, including semiconductor devices, gate driver technology and control methods.
- Liaise with the international power electronics community to share best practice and support common standards and design guidelines.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 5 years of experience in the development, design, implementation and verification of power electronic systems.
- Working knowledge of plant and platform interfaces, component behaviour, verification vehicles, electrical design, system architecture and development process constraints.
- Direct experience with modelling and simulation tools for power electronic conversion systems in multi‑converter environments.
- Experience with PCB design using Altium and/or Cadence is an advantage.
- A working appreciation of associated engineering disciplines; degree, higher degree or equivalent.
- Strong time‑management skills and ability to prioritize tasks in a high‑pressure environment.
- Ability to research application issues, seek solutions beyond the immediate area, and work with suppliers, universities, customers and related industries.
- Capability to deliver training materials and improve business capability.
