Full time, hybrid, 3 days in the office

Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy's nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance, and through-life support.

For over 50 years, Rolls-Royce has been successfully designing and maintaining the control and instrumentation systems for the nuclear reactors that power the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. We currently have multiple generations of reactor control and instrumentation in service and are delivering the next generation of systems to be used in the Dreadnought class of submarines and starting the development of the next class.

To sustain our capability and products for the next 50 years, we are engaged in an active programme of research and development into control system technologies of the future. A role within Submarines will offer you the opportunity to work across all phases of the product life cycle, solving technical challenges across a wide range of digital, software, programmable hardware and electronics technologies, systems, and applications. This will include professional mentoring to continue your professional development.

What you will be doing

  • Act as a prime Engineering and Programme interface on behalf of the overall Project for the relevant package of work
  • Manage the safety aspects of any solution
  • Be the prime Customer technical interface for the relevant project
  • Manage and deliver the project technical solution, defined in the statement of work in accordance with Project policy
  • Provide Programme and Technical leadership and support to the project team and comply with the Engineers Function's policies throughout the life cycle of the project
  • Maintain a programme to ensure that all activities are fully compliant with the company quality system
  • Develop and communicate the plan and budget for delivering the work on time, and manage all costs and resources to ensure delivery of the plan
  • Implement effective technical Risk Management and ensure appropriate Project Gated Review Processes for the package, and apply HS&E policy including a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Ensure appropriate resources are deployed, directed and co-ordinated

Who we're looking for:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent
  • Domain knowledge commensurate with the technical focus of the project(s)
  • Understanding of Product Change control including PCB (Product Change Board) and DDRAM (Design Definition Review and Audit Meeting) and Product Introduction Lifecycle Management experience
  • Project Management experience in planning, controlling budgets and driving to schedules
  • Engineering and technical competence, sufficient to enable decision making commensurate with size of package
  • Experience applying Systems approach or equivalent (Robust Design lead, Black belt, etc.)
  • Experience in leading an Engineering team
