An excellent opportunity has arisen for an Engineering Manager – Welding Development and Deployment within the Inspection, Maintenance & Repair Services (IMRS) area of the Services business. In this role you will provide leadership and strategic direction for the Welding development and deployment team. The work in IMRS is growing with the customer need for more submarines for the UK and SSN AUKUS agreement, plus the increasing in-service support to the current Royal Navy Submarine flotilla.

You will work as part of a team consisting of other Engineering Managers and a Project delivery area also utilising support from other functions around the Submarines Business and wider Submarines Enterprise.

What you will be doing:

  • You’ll be leading a team of Engineers developing fit-for-purpose, innovative welding solutions, from concept to implementation, against customer and governance requirements, whilst adhering to stringent time, cost, and quality constraints.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of engineer’s programmes of work and their adherence to Health, Safety and Welfare whilst working within laboratory/shop-floor environments as well as remote customer sites.
  • Management of Audit programmes to ensure compliance with regulatory codes and standards to maintain ISO 3834 Accreditation along with driving teams training and SQEP requirements.
  • To actively promote, encourage and support the identification and implementation of continuous improvement both within and outside their immediate sphere and prompt action across the wider team.
  • To ensure team acts in accordance with both the company values and those associated with being a professional engineer: with integrity that is beyond reproach.
  • As a manager you will have people management responsibilities for a multi-discipline team, as well as responsibility and accountability for delivering product alongside the other Managers in the team.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Leading a team of multi-discipline engineers to deliver innovative welding solutions.
  • Being a point of contact for the programme areas regarding project progress updates, technical discussion, and problem resolution.
  • Managing resource and tasks to deliver a detailed programme whilst maintaining cost and scope throughout.

Position Qualifications:

  • This role would suit a highly skilled Engineer with good experience working on cradle to grave design projects for bespoke welding processes, techniques and equipment.
  • Degree level education in an engineering discipline and experience to make individual credible in this key role or equivalent experience.
  • A driven individual who has skills in planning, risk management and requirements capture and management.
  • Design and development experience, preferably bespoke welding equipment and the production of the associated technical documentation.
  • An understanding of sound engineering principles, including design for assembly and maintenance and health and safety.
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of welding solutions, products, systems, their functionality and applications.

Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
