An exciting opportunity for a Tooling Design Engineer role with a strong background in stress in the Product Specific Tooling Team has arisen within the New Build and Components Business, in Nuclear (Submarines). In this role, you will work to provide bespoke tooling and fixturing in support of component manufacture and assembly. You will be interacting with the Engineering and Operations teams to ensure the design meets their requirements not only at concept stage but post manufacture ensuring all requirements have been achieved.

The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of British Standards, the Machinery Directive, lifting regulations, and pressure equipment codes, and will be comfortable justifying designs through both hand calculations and FEA.

What you will be doing:

  • Take the journey through the full design process, from requirements capture through to concept, development, and final design stages.
  • Lead the generation of detailed requirements with the customer and identified key stakeholders.
  • Prepare the technical documentation such as design specifications, justifications (hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis) and reports as well as procurement specifications.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant British Standards and regulations, including machinery safety, lifting equipment & pressure equipment.
  • Ensure the required design process is followed both internally and externally.
  • Drive the technical programme to deliver the required outputs on time, to agreed cost and quality.

Position Qualifications:

  • Qualified Mechanical Engineer with a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience and proven capability).
  • Proven delivery of complex mechanical engineering solutions, meeting customer requirements within time, cost, and quality constraints.
  • Strong technical expertise in process and mechanical design, substantiation, engineering governance, and compliance with relevant regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Solid grounding in core engineering principles, including DFM/DFA, ALARP, concurrent engineering, health & safety, environmental awareness, and lessons learned.
  • Experienced in stakeholder engagement, presenting and defending solutions through gated design reviews.
  • Hands-on design and analysis capability, including tooling and fixturing (desirable), FEA (e.g. ANSYS, Abaqus), and CAD/PLM tools such as NX and Teamcenter.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards and regulations, including BS/BS EN, Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), UKCA/CE marking, LOLER, PUWER, lifting standards, and pressure equipment regulations (PESR, PED, ASME BPVC).
