Reporting to the Chief Engineer - Adour, the Chief of Component Engineering will provide technical leadership to our deployed Engineers in the delivery of our in-service support to our customers. In addition, the Chief of Component Engineering will drive delivery of tasks to the required technical quality and ensure compliance with Rolls-Royce processes and customer requirements. This role will serve as our Sub-System and Component Engineering advocate for Engineering work packages and will work closely with the Chief Design Engineer – Adour, to ensure robust design solutions are put in place across the range of our system, sub-system and component work packages and day-to-day activities. With the insight of our customers and operators and working across multi-disciplinary teams, the Chief of Component Engineering will play a key role in identifying and driving improvements in the way we work.
What you will be doing:
- To be the Whole Engine Definition (WED) / project Engineering leadership prime technical interface (both internal and external) in respect of any relevant Sub-System and Component Engineering work packages.
- To provide technical leadership and support to the Adour deployed engineering and programme management teams to comply with the Engineering Function’s policies and the RRMS, throughout the entire life cycle of each engine programme.
- To assure and lead product safety and to support safety activities, to timely completion, including driving the completion of safety reviews following Technical Assessment Documents (TADs), robust root cause analysis and driving the introduction of any safety related modifications.
- To provide technical leadership, coaching and governance, supporting new design definitions through the Design Technical Approval (DTA) process ensuring that solution requirements and processes are satisfied and complied with, including the identification and championing of opportunities for unit and life-cycle cost reductions.
- To provide technical leadership in respect of the component reactivations, manufacturing engagement and approvals, sentencing of manufacturing, in-service and MRO deviations and support to the approval of repairs.
- To provide coaching to the deployed engineers and to work closely with Deployed Engineering Leads and Core Engineering in respect of professional and personal development of the deployed engineers.
- To support our many delivery demands across in-service availability (e.g. support to the Defence UK Operations Centre) and also to customer delivery (e.g. non-conformance, FAIRs and FPAs/MVAs).
- To deputise for the Chief Engineer, as required.

Position qualifications:
- Degree in Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering or relevant Science or Mathematics degree subject with suitable experience.
- Appropriate design/functional domain knowledge to facilitate competent oversight of Engineering activity.
- Proven extensive experience in leading optimised design/function solutions.
Preferred requirements:
- Demonstrable understanding of component design as well as an appreciation of manufacturing and supply chain issues.
- Excellent working-level knowledge and experience of all relevant technical skills.
- A creative thinker who is comfortable with ambiguity and is a pragmatic problem solver.
