Overview
Senior Engineer – Civil & Structural (Hybrid working with one of the following primary locations: Derby, Warrington or Manchester)
Mission
Deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy challenge, positioning us as a world leader in SMRs and the UK’s premier green export technology.
Team
The Civil & Structural team plays a central role in the development of the RR SMR design, supporting the analysis, design, substantiation, and integration of structures across the plant. This includes safety‑classified structures within the Reactor Island and wider generic design scope such as infrastructure, conventional and balance‑of‑plant structures, and interfaces with site‑wide civil works.
Role
Report to the Civil & Structural Team Leader. Lead defined engineering packages and support junior engineers, delivering analysis, design, and technical justification of reinforced concrete, steel and integrated civil works across the Reactor Island and wider site, including generic design, infrastructure, enabling works and site‑specific adaptation.
Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of civil and structural engineering packages, ensuring outputs meet programme, quality, and regulatory expectations.
- Develop and oversee civil and structural analysis and design activities, ensuring adequacy and robustness of technical solutions for structures, foundations, infrastructure and interfacing site works.
- Produce and review design documentation and safety justifications, maintaining clear traceability between requirements, assumptions and outputs.
- Apply governance, quality assurance and design control processes across all activities, ensuring compliance with internal and external standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate civil and structural designs with interfacing systems, structures, components, infrastructure and site‑wide development requirements.
- Support resolution of complex technical challenges, providing engineering judgement and guidance across generic design, infrastructure integration, constructability and site‑specific adaptation.
- Provide direction, oversight and mentoring to junior engineers contributing to package delivery.
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, with Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent demonstrable experience).
- Experience leading civil and structural engineering packages and delivering complex engineering solutions within infrastructure or highly regulated, safety‑critical environments.
- Strong technical knowledge of structural analysis, design and relevant codes and standards, including reinforced concrete and/or steel structures.
- Experience with complex and extreme loading conditions such as seismic, thermal, pressure, blast or impact scenarios.
- Understanding of design substantiation and development of safety justifications; knowledge of nuclear safety cases and systems engineering approaches is advantageous.
- Experience engaging with multidisciplinary stakeholders and supporting technical governance, including design reviews, integration of infrastructure and site‑specific requirements and response to technical challenges.
- Membership of relevant professional institutions and experience with tools or methodologies such as systems engineering or requirements management (e.g. DOORS) would be beneficial.
