We are Rolls‑Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once‑in‑a‑career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy. The Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) function plays a critical role in defining and delivering the control and protection systems that underpin the SMR power station. Within this, Modelling & Simulation is central to validating system behaviour, supporting design decisions and assuring functional performance across the plant.
As a Senior C&I Modelling & Simulation Engineer, you will be responsible for the development, integration, validation and verification of simulation models representing the nuclear power plant and its C&I systems. You will work across a complex, multidisciplinary environment, developing simulation models and architectures to support design development and verification of functional requirements. This includes building and integrating system‑level and component‑level models, ensuring they are suitable for both real‑time and accelerated simulation. You will play a key role in shaping modelling approaches, contributing to the development of simulation environments, tools, policies and procedures, and supporting the wider EC&I team in the application of modelling and simulation across the programme.
We’ll Need You To:
- Develop, validate and verify simulation models of nuclear plant and C&I systems
- Define and develop simulation model architectures and integrate system component models
- Support C&I design activities through modelling and simulation outputs
- Develop models suitable for real‑time and accelerated simulation environments
- Contribute to verification and validation of C&I functional requirements
- Support the development of modelling environments, tools, processes and standards
- Work within an agile framework to plan and deliver modelling activities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to understand system performance and behaviour
- Integrate software models into wider system architectures
- Deliver work packages to time, cost and quality requirements
- Support and coach junior engineers in modelling and simulation techniques
Key Skills Required:
- Experience in modelling and simulation within a complex engineering environment
- Strong understanding of systems‑engineering principles including requirements management and decision‑making
- Experience in dynamic modelling tools such as MATLAB, Simulink or similar platforms
- Experience in software development and use of programming languages for modelling purposes
- Knowledge of software verification and validation processes
- Experience of working in agile development environments
- Understanding of control systems design, including control theory and control laws
- Experience integrating software and hardware systems (desirable)
- Knowledge of high‑integrity or regulated industries such as nuclear, aerospace or defence (beneficial)
- Understanding of functional safety standards such as IEC 61508 or IEC 61513 (desirable)
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working across multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to mentor and support the development of other engineers
Qualifications:
- Degree‑qualified in Engineering, Physics or a related discipline with a strong modelling, simulation or software component
- Chartered, or working towards chartership (or equivalent), desirable
Location: Hybrid working with one of the following as your primary site: Derby, Manchester or Warrington.
Salary And Package: The salary band for this role will be between £50,650 – £66,500 dependent on the skills, values and knowledge you bring. There may be flexibility in exceptional cases, and the role may develop further as the programme grows.
Benefits Include:
- Bonus – Performance‑related target opportunity up to 12.5%
- Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum for a bespoke package
- Pension – 12% employer and 6% employee contributions
- Holidays – 28 days (+ public holidays) with the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days
- Private Medical Insurance – BUPA single cover
