At Rolls-Royce SMR, we’re shaping the future of clean energy. We’re looking for an Environment Technical Specialist / Conventional Environment Assessor to help us design and deliver a next-generation nuclear technology that protects both people and the environment.
We need you to play a key role in developing our integrated Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) case—ensuring our designs meet the highest environmental standards and represent Best Available Techniques (BAT).
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and contribute to environmental assessments that support design justification and regulatory submissions
- Support the development of BAT cases for design and site-specific variations
- Work closely with engineering teams to ensure environmental considerations are embedded in design decisions
- Participate in optioneering and HAZOP workshops to influence safe and sustainable design outcomes
- Provide expert advice on environmental protection and regulatory requirements
- Represent the project in technical reviews and engage with external stakeholders, including regulators
- Support training and capability development across environmental topics
What we’re looking for

- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline
- Chartered status, or you’re working towards it
- Experience within the UK environmental regulatory framework (ideally nuclear or highly regulated industries)
- Strong experience producing BAT assessments or environmental safety cases
- Confidence working in multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence a range of stakeholders
It would be great if you also have:
- Knowledge of nuclear plant design (e.g. PWR)
- Experience supporting Environmental Impact Assessments or permitting

Hybrid working with a base near Manchester, Warrington or Derby. Flexible and part-time working options available. We work with you to find a pattern that supports both your role and your life outside work.
Salary and Benefits
