We are Rolls‑Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once‑in‑a‑career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.
The Verification & Validation (V&V) function is responsible for ensuring that the SMR power station design meets its requirements and performs as intended. Through analysis, testing and evidence generation, the team plays a critical role in demonstrating design compliance and supporting delivery certainty across the programme.
About the Role:
As an Engineer – V&V Delivery, you will support the development and execution of verification and validation strategies across key areas of the SMR power station. You will work closely with design engineers and technical specialists to define how systems will be verified, what evidence is required, and how compliance with requirements will be demonstrated. This includes supporting a range of activities such as analysis, testing, and review of evidence generated both internally and across the supply chain. Your work will directly contribute to the validation of the SMR design and the development of the safety case, ensuring the power station meets its technical and regulatory requirements.
We’ll Need You To:
- Support development of verification and validation strategies for assigned areas
- Define verification activities and required evidence (e.g. analysis, test programmes)
- Work with design teams and technical specialists to agree V&V approaches
- Review and assess verification evidence generated internally and by suppliers
- Collate and manage evidence to demonstrate compliance with system requirements
- Support determination of design compliance based on V&V outputs
- Contribute to safety case development and supporting evidence
- Produce technical reports and support engagement with regulatory stakeholders
- Act as an intelligent customer when reviewing external V&V activities
- Identify and manage risks, issues and assumptions within your scope
Key Skills Required:
We know there’s no such thing as the ‘perfect’ candidate. If you meet around 75% of the criteria below, we’d love to hear from you:
- Experience in verification and validation within engineering environments
- Understanding of product or system compliance processes and requirements
- Experience in analysis, testing, or evidence‑based engineering activities
- Experience working in regulated or safety‑critical industries such as nuclear, defence, energy or oil & gas
- Strong analytical and systems‑thinking mindset
- Ability to work across multidisciplinary teams to solve complex problems
- Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- Ability to manage uncertainty and adapt to changing requirements
- Awareness of project delivery, risk management and structured engineering processes
There are multiple roles to fill within the team, and we are particularly interested in speaking with people from one or more of the following backgrounds:
- Systems design integration across multiple engineering disciplines (e.g. fluid systems, thermo‑hydraulics, mechanical, reactor core)
- Equipment Qualification (EQ) on a previous nuclear project, or qualification of components in a safety‑critical environment
- Reactor systems and/or components (e.g. reactor internals, integrated head package, control rod drive mechanisms)
- Nuclear auxiliary systems or components (e.g. radioactive liquid/solid/gas processing and storage, HVAC, nuclear sampling and handling)
- Existing civil, structural or mechanical systems, structures or components (Modular structures in steel or concrete, Design for fire, blast, missile or seismic hazards, Performance testing or physical test programmes)
Qualifications:
Degree‑qualified in Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience). Experience in systems engineering, verification or validation activities desirable.
Location: Hybrid working with one of the following as your primary site: Derby, Manchester or Warrington.
Salary and Package:
The salary band for this role will be between £42,000 – £55,150 dependent on the skills, values and knowledge you bring. There may be flexibility in exceptional cases, and the role may develop further as the programme grows.
