Role: Engineer – Civil & Structural
Location: Hybrid working with a primary office in Derby, Warrington, or Manchester.
Overview
Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. We are developing the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) – a British solution to a global energy challenge. The Civil & Structural team plays a central role in designing, analyzing, and integrating structures across the plant, from safety‑classified Reactor Island components to broader infrastructure and site‑wide civil works. The role reports to the Civil & Structural Team Leader and supports Senior Engineers and Analysts in delivering robust design solutions and safety documentation for reinforced concrete and steel structures.
Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of civil and structural engineering packages, contributing to analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures across the Reactor Island, plant areas, and associated infrastructure.
- Assist in developing, checking, and interpreting structural analysis (including finite element modelling) to support design decisions and the maturation of generic design solutions.
- Prepare design documentation and safety case inputs, ensuring outputs are clear, traceable, and aligned with programme, licensing, and site deployment requirements.
- Apply governance, design control, and quality assurance processes to ensure compliance with internal standards, relevant codes, and regulatory expectations.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate interfaces with systems, components, architecture, layout, geotechnics, construction, and other engineering disciplines.
- Develop solutions for site‑specific works including foundations, external structures, below‑ground works, and broader infrastructure interfaces as project needs evolve.
- Support the resolution of technical issues, escalating where appropriate, and contribute to continuous improvement in engineering delivery.
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to personal development, building capability in analysis, design, constructability, and nuclear safety principles.
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent qualification) with a clear pathway toward professional accreditation (e.g., Chartered or Incorporated Engineer).
- Experience contributing to civil and structural engineering projects, including analysis and design within infrastructure, industrial, energy, or other regulated and safety‑critical environments.
- Demonstrable understanding of structural behaviour, analysis techniques, and relevant design codes and standards, able to apply these under appropriate supervision.
- Experience with reinforced concrete and/or steel structures; exposure to complex loading conditions such as seismic, thermal, pressure, accidental, or extreme environmental events is advantageous.
- Awareness of how civil and structural design interfaces with site‑specific considerations such as ground conditions, constructability, access, utilities, drainage, and external works.
- Ability to work within established engineering processes, demonstrating sound judgement appropriate to your level of experience and seeking guidance when required.
- Strong communication skills, able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and contribute to technical discussions across a broad project scope.
