We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Senior Engineer – Fluids Block Lead, to be involved in industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of power station.

Key Results & What can be achieved in the role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the key responsibilities of the Senior Engineer – Fluids Block Lead include:

  • Provide design direction, co-ordinating and driving a multi-discipline team to deliver the Fluids Blocks. Generate a collaborative working environment and influence stakeholders (ranging from Components and Mechanical Handling to Civils and Architecture) to deliver an optimised layout.
  • Develop the layout and installation design of the Fluids Block in accordance with the gated life-cycle design process, presenting at technical reviews and definition reviews (where appropriate) and taking responsibility for resolving technical challenges and issues.
  • Support and develop individuals within their team.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to the team on both technical and governance related matters.
  • Help develop the delivery strategy for the Fluids Block, based on inputs from key stakeholders: Civils, Architecture, E3S, Human Factors, Systems, Components, CAD, Operations, Build Certainty, Supply Chain and others.
  • Develop and update the plan for the Fluids Block to ensure delivery to cost, quality and schedule.
  • Manage risks and lessons learnt, raising these as appropriate.
  • Provide technical checking and approvals where appropriate.

Key Selection Criteria

Design Experience:

  • Proven experience in the delivery of layout and/or installation design programmes to time, cost, and quality.
  • Experience in leading the development of design solutions from initial concept through to detailed design definition using a Robust Design methodology; this will include experience of DfX and trade-off studies to ensure an optimum design solution is produced.
  • Logical problem solving and strong engineering design decision making will be crucial in this role to arrive at the optimal arrangement and design of the modular solution.

Systems Engineering Experience:

The role will require skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Requirements management
  • Stakeholder management
  • Technical and programme risk management
  • Design for through-life operation, fault scenarios and EMIT
  • Gated Design Review process.

Leadership of design engineers, including:

  • Definition of a project/programme of work.
  • Delivery of programme milestones in line with agreed plans and budgets.
  • Management of risks.
  • Monitoring of progress.
  • Technical writing and communication.
  • Technical supervision and coaching.
  • Technical checking and output approval.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills:

  • Excellent influencing and inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to simplify complex topics and communicate to a wide range of stakeholders.

Wider Experience:

  • Experience of piping design, piping layout and awareness of pipe stress will be required to be successful in this role.
  • Experience within the design of nuclear mechanical systems is highly desirable, but not mandated.
  • Applicants with wider industry experience in the application of modularisation and mechanical design of process systems will also be considered

Training & Qualification Requirements

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in an engineering discipline.
  • Experience in the leadership of an engineering team.
  • Chartered Engineer (or working towards Chartership).

Pay and benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 – £62,500 DOE plus:-

  • Bonus – Performance related target opportunity 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension – 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays – 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
  • Private Medical Insurance – BUPA single cover health care
  • Life Assurance – 6x pensionable pay
  • £250 – One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
