Hybrid working near Manchester, Warrington, or Derby

Rolls‐Royce SMR is developing a new generation of small modular reactors that will help deliver clean, affordable, secure energy for the UK and beyond. To support this mission, we’re looking for a Senior Advisor – Environment (Radiological Impact) to join our Safety & Regulatory Affairs directorate.

If you meet around 75% of what’s listed, we’d still love to hear from you.

Why this role matters

We need you to help build the radiological elements of our Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) Case, supporting both our generic design assessment and site‐specific developments. You’ll make sure radiological impacts are fully assessed, understood and optimised—contributing directly to the safe, responsible deployment of the Rolls‐Royce SMR.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll play a key part in shaping the radiological environmental approach for RR SMR. You’ll:

  • Produce radiological dose assessments and technical documentation for the E3S Case.
  • Support the development of radiological impact chapters for GDA and future operator submissions.
  • Complete discharge modelling (IRAT, ADMS, PC CREAM).
  • Assess the radiological impacts of gaseous and liquid discharges.
  • Act as a radiological environmental SME in internal reviews and external regulatory meetings.
  • Respond to technical queries from internal stakeholders and regulators.
  • Participate in optioneering and HAZOP workshops, ensuring environmental requirements are always captured.
  • Work closely with reactor chemistry and radioactive waste teams to quantify discharges and ensure BAT is applied throughout design.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who brings experience, curiosity and collaboration. You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience working within the UK environmental regulatory framework, ideally on a licensed nuclear site.
  • Strong experience assessing radiological environmental impacts and communicating findings to mixed audiences.
  • Expertise in applying Best Available Techniques (BAT) in environmental decision‐making.
  • Confidence working across multidisciplinary teams, including suppliers, to deliver “right first time” outcomes.
  • Strong communication and relationship‐building skills, especially with regulators and internal stakeholders.
  • The ability to manage stakeholder disagreements constructively and professionally.

Qualifications & background

You’ll bring one of the following:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Chartered status, or you may be working towards it.

Working with us

At Rolls‐Royce SMR, we’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, welcomed and able to thrive. We know innovation happens when diverse perspectives and experiences come together.

We’re happy to discuss:

  • Flexible working
  • Part‐time options
  • Adjustments during the recruitment process or in the workplace

Just let us know what you need.

Pay, benefits & rewards

  • Salary: ÂŁ50,650 - ÂŁ66,500
  • Benefits allowance: ÂŁ2,200
  • Bonus: 12.5%
  • Holiday: 28 days + bank holidays
  • Pension: Standard Rolls‐Royce SMR pension 12%
  • Life Assurance: 6× pensionable salary
  • Income Protection: 50%
  • New joiner payment: ÂŁ250
  • Working week: 37.5 hours, with flexible arrangements available

Security & background checks

This role requires BPSS clearance and is subject to export control restrictions. As part of our offer process, we carry out security and financial probity checks, including a DBS check. These are reviewed on a case‐by‐case basis and are not “pass/fail” assessments.

Where you’ll work

This is a hybrid role based near Manchester, Warrington, or Derby, with flexibility built in.

You’ll be joining a forward-thinking organisation that values transparency, fairness, and innovation. We offer:

  • A flexible, inclusive, and supportive working environment.
  • Opportunities for career growth in a rapidly scaling business.
  • A culture that values diversity, innovation, and continuous learning.

We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all backgrounds. Inclusivity is important to us, and as a Disability Confident organisation, we are committed to fair, supportive, and continually improving recruitment practices that ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as a 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Also, if you are considering a career move or a sector-jump, please get in touch – we welcome applications from people with transferable skills.

Our Application Process

Due to the safety regulations within the nuclear industry, applicants will be required to participate in additional screening. These are:

  • Obtaining Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance
  • Satisfactory completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
  • Satisfactory completion of a basic financial probity check
