The Company
At Rolls‑Royce SMR, our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programme provides a British solution to a global energy crisis, combining world‑class engineering, advanced manufacturing and a new era of low‑carbon innovation. We are uniquely positioned to become a world leader in SMRs and the UK’s flagship green‑export technology, supporting energy security, national resilience and a more sustainable future.
The Team
You will join our Plant Support Equipment (PSE) function, a newly created and rapidly growing team responsible for the design, definition and delivery of all equipment needed to inspect, maintain, repair, install and support SMR plant systems throughout their full lifecycle. PSE plays a central role in ensuring our power stations are ready for operation, remain safe throughout their lifetime, and can be serviced efficiently during outages. This team works closely with specialists across components, systems, stress, shielding, thermal analysis, supply chain and construction partners.
Role Summary
We are looking for a Senior Engineer who wants to shape the future of nuclear engineering. In this role, you will help define, design and deliver the tools and equipment that enable SMRs to be safely installed, commissioned, maintained and eventually decommissioned. This role is pivotal; your work ensures that every solution we deploy is safe, compliant, traceable, and ready to support first‑of‑a‑kind nuclear power stations. You’ll influence the integration of PSE across the entire power‑station lifecycle and contribute to a growing engineering capability with global reach.
Key Responsibilities
You will be doing…
- Developing and delivering PSE designs, from requirements capture through CAD models, mechanical sequences and technical substantiation.
- Acting as an intelligent customer — reviewing, challenging and validating supplier solutions against safety, quality and regulatory expectations.
- Preparing clear, evidence‑based technical documentation to support regulatory submissions, including ONR‑aligned ALARP/SAPs substantiation.
- Coordinating with multiple disciplines: layout, components, systems, stress, shielding, thermal analysis, supply chain and procurement.
- Managing requirements and configuration using DOORS to ensure full lifecycle traceability.
- Identifying risks, opportunities, innovations and continuous‑improvement actions.
- Supporting and mentoring junior engineers, helping build capability across the team.
Essential Qualifications & Skills
These are the non‑negotiables for this role:
- Strong experience in mechanical or nuclear engineering design and technical delivery.
- Experience producing technical reports, justifications, or regulatory evidence aligned to safety codes, standards and ALARP principles.
- Ability to interpret and manage engineering requirements (e.g., DOORS).
- Proven cross‑functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Understanding of through‑life activities: installation, commissioning, operations, maintenance and decommissioning.
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline.
Pay and Benefits
We anticipate paying a salary of between ÂŁ50,650 - ÂŁ66,500 plus:
- Bonus - Performance related target opportunity 12.5%
- Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
- Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
- Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
- Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
- Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
- ÂŁ250 - One-off
