Role Title: Lead C&I Engineer (with Safety Case Experience)
Salary Range: £57,600 – £75,600 DOE
Location: Any Rolls-Royce SMR Location – Hybrid working flexibility

Role Purpose

As a Lead C&I Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the licensing and regulatory readiness of our control and instrumentation systems for the Rolls-Royce SMR nuclear power plant. You will lead the development and maintenance of safety case documentation, ensuring alignment with engineering design and regulatory expectations.

You’ll work closely with engineering and safety case teams to apply structured methodologies such as Claims, Arguments and Evidence (CAE), and ensure compliance with Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) principles. Your expertise will help shape the safety case for all C&I systems and the overall architecture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and maintenance of C&I safety case using CAE structure
  • Support licensing activities and ensure documentation is suitable for regulatory assessment
  • Drive safety case requirements into engineering design activities
  • Ensure alignment between safety case and engineering documentation
  • Apply ALARP, BAT, and RGP principles to C&I systems
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines and with external stakeholders
  • Manage packages of work delivered by the supply chain

Experience Required

Nuclear Safety Case Expertise

  • Strong experience in substantiating engineering systems using CAE structure
  • Authoring and verifying safety cases for nuclear applications
  • Applying probabilistic and deterministic safety principles
  • Extensive understanding of PWR plant design and operation
  • Broad knowledge of systems significant to nuclear safety
  • Awareness of internal/external hazard impacts on C&I systems

Regulatory Experience

  • Familiarity with UK civil nuclear regulatory regime
  • Understanding of ONR Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs)
  • Experience presenting and defending safety case materials to regulators
  • Proven ability to work across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Leadership in briefing teams on safety case structure and impact

Mandatory Training & Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent experience

Beneficial Experience & Qualifications

  • PWR design and technology training
  • Experience with probabilistic and deterministic safety assessments
  • Familiarity with hazard assessment and CAE safety case development

Pay and benefits

We anticipate paying a salary of between £57,600 – £75,600 DOE plus:-

  • Bonus – Performance related target opportunity 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension – 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays – 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
  • Private Medical Insurance – BUPA single cover health care
  • Life Assurance – 6x pensionable pay
  • £250 – One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
