The Manager for Core faults and Thermal hydraulic performance is responsible for the progressive design of the RR SMR Reactor Core, inclusive of:
- Analysis of core thermal hydraulics and development of associated methods (e.g. DNBR using VIPRE)
- Analysis of core related fault sequences and development of associated methods (e.g. Rod ejection accidents using S5k)
- Multiple disciplines including Reactor Physics and Thermal Hydraulics
The role covers the technical and programme leadership of large teams of analysts. This includes:
- The overall direction and governance of the programmes of work under their scope
- Accepting the validity of the methods and analysis developed under their direction
- The delivery of a robust method development, producing performance and underpinning safety assessments
- Ensuring outputs comply with environment, safety, security and safeguards (E3S) objectives and SMR best practice for performance and method development
- Developing the team capabilities and resilience
- Resolving emergent issues
The candidate will be a leading professional in core faults and thermal hydraulic performance with a strong proven record of delivery of complex programmes. The Manager for core faults and thermal hydraulic performance is a leadership figure within Engineering. It requires strong performance experience, proven leadership skills, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. They will use their experience and abilities to steer and influence colleagues across reactor design, displaying a positive and collaborative leadership style that ensures successful team management.
Success will demand engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, inclusive of industry bodies and regulators, to ensure the allocated design programme is progressed in accordance with broader business and legislative requirements.
Role Criteria:
- Nuclear industry domain knowledge including: Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) design, plant and behaviour, Reactor plant operations, philosophy and procedures.
- Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguarding (E3S) regulations and principles (including application of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and Best Available Technique (BAT) principles).
- Technical background: Design basis fault assessment methods, Core Sub-channel Analysis (VIPRE, CTF), Core transient analysis code such as S5K, Establishing analysis methodologies based on RGP which integrate multiple technical disciplines such as thermal hydraulics and fuel performance, Coupling of physics codes with other analysis methods and tools, Development of pre and post processing software tools such as in Python, Familiarity with software development processes and quality assurance arrangements.
- Technical leadership and programme delivery: Definition of an engineering project/programme of work, Delivery of programme milestones in line with agreed plans and budgets, Management of risks, Monitoring of progress, Technical writing and communication, Technical supervision.
- People Leadership: Experience leading others, People development, including feedback and coaching, Resource management, including team planning and task prioritisation.
