Our mission is to deliver clean, affordable energy for all. Our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) provides a British solution to a global energy challenge. We are in pole position to become a global leader in SMRs and the UK’s premier green export technology.
The Layout & Installation Assemblies team plays a central role in turning engineered concepts into deployable reality. Focused on modularisation, constructability and integration, the team ensures that complex systems are translated into efficient, buildable assemblies that support safe, repeatable and scalable deployment.
In this context, we are looking for a Layout and Installation Assemblies Engineer - Site Specific, reporting to the Manager - Site Specific Layout. Operating within a focused Layout and Installations team, you will take ownership of a defined area within a site-specific Reactor Island Layout, driving integration of Structures, Systems and Components in order to meet the applicable Safety, Cost and Schedule targets.
This is a hands-on engineering role at the heart of our modular build philosophy. You will develop site-specific layouts for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems, define how modules are manufactured, installed and commissioned, and ensure designs are aligned to safety, quality and programme objectives. Working across disciplines, you will play a key role in delivering a robust, buildable and optimised plant design. You will play a role in interfacing with the customer and the site-specific project teams in order to translate the RR SMR generic design into a site-specific application.
What you’ll be delivering
- Developing and progressing the design of Reactor Island Layout and Installation designs for site-specific applications through gated design review processes
- Defining layout and installation strategies for MEP modules, ensuring alignment with system, component and integration requirements
- Collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders and customers to capture requirements, assumptions and resolve integration challenges
- Supporting configuration management, risk identification and technical decision-making across the design lifecycle
- Contributing to constructability, manufacturing and commissioning strategies to enable modular delivery
- Producing and supporting technical documentation and inputs into design reviews and safety case development.
What you’ll bring
This is a critical delivery-focused role—you’ll bring structured thinking, strong problem-solving capability and a collaborative approach, alongside the ability to translate complex engineering requirements into practical, buildable solutions.
Skills & experience
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with Chartered status (or working towards)
- Experience delivering installation, layout or modular design solutions within complex engineering programmes
- Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements, risk and design review processes
- Experience in plant layout, building services, pipework routing or process system integration
- Familiarity with regulated or safety-critical environments (e.g. nuclear, oil & gas, infrastructure) advantageous
This role can be based at any Rolls-Royce SMR location, with hybrid working supported. Regular collaboration is expected, with occasional travel to other sites as required.
What’s in it for you
- We anticipate paying a salary of between £42,000-£55,150
- Bonus - Performance related target opportunity 7%
- Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
- Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
- Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
- Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
- Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
