We are Rolls‑Royce SMR, leading breakthrough nuclear solutions. This role is part of the Performance & Analysis team, the centre of excellence for engineering analysis used to substantiate performance and safety of the SMR power station.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead a small team to model fluid and thermal systems that extract power from the nuclear core and ensure safe reactor operation.
- Produce models and analyses demonstrating reactor operation, and work closely with system designers to optimise plant design and safety systems for maximum safety, performance and value for money.
- Support development and authoring of safety‑case documentation and contribute to key safety‑case sections.
- Collaborate across engineering and non‑engineering disciplines to define analysis requirements and communicate results.
- Apply technical expertise to develop capability, mentor staff and lead interfaces with other business areas.
- Develop robust, automated analysis routes around the analysis codes, primarily using Python on Linux‑based HPC resources.
- Benchmark codes against test data and support the design of large‑scale test rigs where required.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Strong understanding of fluid dynamics and thermal processes, with experience applying structured, methodical analysis approaches.
- Hands‑on experience using industry‑standard fluids and thermal analysis software; familiarity with nuclear thermal‑hydraulics tools (RELAP, FLOMASTER, VIPRE, CTF, GOTHIC desirable).
- Proven ability to develop analysis methods, models and tools, including Python‑based solutions, to support design and safety‑case development.
- Skilled in writing clear, structured analysis reports and contributing to safety‑case documentation.
- Experience in verification, validation and uncertainty quantification of analysis models, including benchmarking, and adherence to software QA processes.
- Knowledge of safety‑critical plant systems in nuclear, oil & gas or aerospace; nuclear‑specific knowledge desirable but not essential.
- Track record of delivering analysis tasks on time, cost and quality, with strong communication and leadership skills.
- Degree‑qualified in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science; Chartered Engineer (or equivalent) preferred.
Location & Working Arrangements
Hybrid working with one of the following primary sites: Derby, Manchester or Warrington.
Salary and Package
Salary band: £50,650 – £66,500, depending on skills and experience. Potential for starting salary flexibility in exceptional cases.
